NASA Launches Twin Probes to Study Earth's Radiation Belts

Want to stay on top of all the space news? Follow @universetoday on Twitter

After nearly a week of weather and technical delays, NASA?s Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) launched in the early morning skies from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 4:05a.m. EDT (08:05 GMT) on Thursday, August 30, 2012. This will be the first twin-spacecraft mission designed to explore our planet?s radiation belts.

?Scientists will learn in unprecedented detail how the radiation belts are populated with charged particles, what causes them to change and how these processes affect the upper reaches of the atmosphere around Earth,? said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate at Headquarters in Washington. ?The information collected from these probes will benefit the public by allowing us to better protect our satellites and understand how space weather affects communications and technology on Earth.?

The two satellites, launched from an Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex-41, each weigh just under 680 kg (1,500 pounds) and comprise the first dual-spacecraft mission specifically created to investigate this hazardous regions of near-Earth space, known as the radiation belts. These two belts, named for their discoverer, James Van Allen, encircle the planet like donuts and are filled with highly charged particles. The belts are affected by solar storms and coronal mass ejections and sometimes swell dramatically. When this occurs, they can pose dangers to communications, GPS satellites and human spaceflight

?We have never before sent such comprehensive and high-quality instruments to study high radiation regions of space,? said Barry Mauk, RBSP project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University?s Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md. ?RBSP was crafted to help us learn more about, and ultimately predict, the response of the radiation belts to solar inputs.?

The hardy RBSP satellites will spend the next 2 years looping through every part of both Van Allen belts. By having two spacecraft in different regions of the belts at the same time, scientists finally will be able to gather data from within the belts themselves, learning how they change over space and time. Designers fortified RBSP with special protective plating and rugged electronics to operate and survive within this punishing region of space that other spacecraft avoid. In addition, a space weather broadcast will transmit selected data from those instruments around the clock, giving researchers a check on current conditions near Earth.

?The excitement of seeing the spacecraft in orbit and beginning to perform science measurements is like no other thrill,? said Richard Fitzgerald, RBSP project manager at APL. ?The entire RBSP team, from across every organization, worked together to produce an amazing pair of spacecraft.?

The first RBSP spacecraft separated from the Atlas rocket?s Centaur booster 1 hour, 18 minutes, 52 seconds after launch. The second RBSP spacecraft followed 12 minutes, 14 seconds later.

During the next 60 days, operators will power up all flight systems and science instruments and deploy long antenna booms, two of which are more than 54 yards long. Data about the particles that swirl through the belts, and the fields and waves that transport them, will be gathered by five instrument suites designed and operated by teams at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark; the University of Iowa in Iowa City; University of Minnesota in Minneapolis; and the University of New Hampshire in Durham; and the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Va. The data will be analyzed by scientists across the nation almost immediately.

Activities Off the Slopes in Avoriaz

Avoriaz is a very popular ski resort in the Portes du Soleil, and thousands of people head here each year to enjoy the excellent skiing on offer. However, when you arrange a Geneva to Avoriaz transfer and arrive in the ski resort, you will soon realise that there is a lot more to resort than just skiing.

Here is a quick guide to some of the best activities off the slopes if you feel like doing something different.

Tobogganing

Tobogganing provides a safe and fun way to get around in the resort. You can buy your own toboggan when you arrive after your transfer from Geneva to Avoriaz, or you can rent one instead. There are lots of slopes where you can enjoy riding your toboggan, and for a really exciting experience make sure you head down the Crot Slope ? at night. At over three-kilometres-long and well supervised by staff, it is the ultimate tobogganing experience in the resort.

Mountain Biking

You might not think that it is possible to go mountain biking in a ski resort, but this is a very popular activity here. It is very popular in the summer when the snow does not interfere, but even in the winter it is still possible. Try the Super Morzine trail which is one of the best in the area ? you can arrange to ride down this with a biking company. You can rent the bike and equipment from the same place so there is no need to take your own.

Ice Climbing

Climbing a frozen solid glacier or a waterfall frozen is one of the most exciting experiences you can have off the slopes here. After your transfer from Geneva to Avoriaz this should be on your list of must-do activities. You do not need to be a pro to enjoy this experience, although you will probably want to go with an experienced guide who can also provide you with the right equipment. Brochaux waterfall is just one of the places to have a go at ice climbing, but there are plenty of other places to explore.

Shoe Shoeing

Snow shoeing is a great way to see the countryside around this beautiful resort. It is easy to rent your own equipment and go off on your own, or you can join up with a guided group. If you don?t like skiing or just feel like a day off then this is a great option.

Have Fun Off the Slopes

When you book a transfer from Geneva to Avoriaz, you will find yourself in one of the best ski resorts in the region ? but don?t limit yourself to skiing! As you can see, there are lots of excellent activities to choose from when you arrive here, so if you feel like something different then hang up your skis and try one of these out.

Apple and Motorola strike patent peace deal in Germany

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Some two dozen topless women protested in a New York City park on a hot, sweaty Sunday as part of what they called "National Go-Topless Day" to draw attention to inequality in topless rights between men and women. There were topless men in the park, too, but nobody paid them much attention, a disparity, organizers said, that demonstrated the need for the event. The topless women drew crowds of onlookers who took pictures and video with their cell phones. ...

Most Americans say the rich don't pay enough taxes

(AP) ? As the income gap between rich and poor widens, a majority of Americans say the growing divide is bad for the country and believe that wealthy people are paying too little in taxes, according to a new survey.

The poll released Monday by the Pew Research Center points to a particular challenge for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, whose party's policies are viewed by a wide majority as favoring the rich over the middle class and poor.

The poll found that many Americans believe rich people to be intelligent and hardworking but also greedy and less honest than the average American. Nearly six in 10, or 58 percent, say the rich don't pay enough in taxes, while 26 percent believe the rich pay their fair share and 8 percent say they pay too much.

Even among those who describe themselves as "upper class" or "upper middle class," more than half ? or 52 percent ? said upper-income Americans don't pay enough in taxes; only 10 percent said they paid too much. This upper tier was more likely to say they are more financially secure now than 10 years ago ? 62 percent, compared to 44 percent for those who identified themselves as middle class and 29 percent for the lower class. They are less likely to report problems in paying rent or mortgage, losing a job, paying for medical care or other bills and cutting back on household expenses.

The findings come at the start of this week's Republican National Convention and as both Romney and President Barack Obama seek to appeal to a broad swath of financially struggling voters who identify as middle class. Romney supports an extension of Bush-era tax cuts for everyone including the wealthiest 2 percent, and says his policies will benefit the middle class by boosting the economy and creating jobs.

"The fact that Romney may be viewed as wealthy doesn't necessarily pose problems for his candidacy," said Kim Parker, associate director of Pew Social & Demographic Trends, noting that people see the wealthy as having both positive and negative attributes. "The challenge for Romney lies more in the fact that large majorities say if he is elected president, his policies would likely benefit the wealthy."

The results reinforce a tide of recent economic data showing a widening economic divide. America's middle class has been shrinking in the stagnant economy and poverty is now approaching 1960s highs, while wealth concentrates at the top. A separate Pew survey earlier this year found that tensions between the rich and poor were increasing and at their most intense level in nearly a quarter-century.

In fact, well-off people do shoulder a big share of the tax burden. Though households earning over $1 million annually comprise just 0.3 percent of all taxpayers, they pay 20 percent of all federal taxes the government is projected to collect this year, according to the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan group that studies tax policy. The figures included income, payroll and estate taxes. In contrast, households earning $50,000 to $75,000 a year accounted for 12 percent of taxpayers and contributed 9 percent of federal taxes, the center's data showed. Some 46 percent of households pay no federal income tax at all, although they do pay payroll, excise and other taxes.

According to the latest findings, about 63 percent of Americans say the GOP favors the rich over the middle class and poor, and 71 percent say Romney's election would be good for wealthy people. A smaller share, 20 percent, says the same about the Democratic Party. More Americans ? 60 percent ? say if Obama is re-elected his policies will benefit the poor, while half say they'll help the middle class and 37 percent say they'll boost the wealthy.

"The Great Recession was not an equal opportunity disemployer," said Sheldon Danziger, a public policy professor at the University of Michigan who describes the gap between rich and poor as the widest in decades. "College graduates, whites and middle-aged workers had fewer and shorter layoffs than high school graduates, blacks, Hispanics and younger workers. And, only a small percentage of the rich work in the hardest-hit industries, like construction and manufacturing."

About 65 percent of Americans say the gap between rich and poor has gotten wider in the past decade, while 20 percent believe it has stayed the same and 7 percent say the gap has gotten smaller. Separately, 57 percent say a widening income gap is a bad thing for society; just 3 percent say it is a good thing.

Asked to estimate how much a family of four would need to earn to be considered wealthy in their area, the median amount given by survey respondents was $150,000. For middle class, the median amount was $70,000.

Many Americans see rich people as more likely to be intelligent (43 percent) and hardworking (42 percent) than average Americans. But the rich are also seen as more likely to be greedy (55 percent). Thirty-four percent of those surveyed say the rich are less likely to be honest than the average person; just 12 percent say the rich are more likely to be honest.

The Pew survey involved telephone interviews with 2,508 adults conducted from July 16 to 26. It has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.

QueryTracker Blog: Writing Realistic Love Relationships

One of the challenges of writing relationships is making romantic relationships realistic.?A problem I see in some fiction is that there is no reason for the characters to fall for each other or be in love?other than the fact that they're both excruciatingly hot, of course.

As in real life, your characters should be attracted to the people they're attracted to for a reason beyond the superficial. (Don?t get me wrong, some people fall into passionate but superficial relationships, but they tend to burn out quickly without the other important aspects of true love: commitment and intimacy.)

In real life, finding and getting along with your ?other half? long-term is difficult. The good news when it comes to fiction is that Conflict is the engine that keeps every story going, and the love relationship between your characters is one of the most important parts of that engine.

Some questions to help you generate realistic conflicts. Try to be as specific as you can when you answer.

  • What drives you crazy in a relationship? What are your pet peeves?
  • What drives your partner (or past partners) crazy about you?
  • What kinds of life decisions and stages have created conflict in your life? That is, which things challenge your relationships? Money decisions? Family decisions? Work decisions? Something else?
  • What really stresses you out (in general)? How does this impact your relationships with others??

In real life people choose the partners they do for all kinds of reasons, some of them noble and romantic, some of them less so. ?For example, maybe they had great "chemistry" with their partner. Maybe they had a lot in common. ?Maybe they need to feel needed. ?Maybe they wanted to get out of their parents' house. ?Maybe they were ready to settle down. ?Maybe they needed someone to help them parent a child. ?Regardless, there is definitely a reason other than that an author needed them together to make a particular storyline work. Some things to think about:
  • What attracted your character to the love interest in the first place? ?
  • What needs does the love interest fulfill for your hero or heroine?
  • Why is the love interest different from all the other men and women out there?

Once your characters are together, why do they stay together? ?Doing couples therapy was always a fascinating endeavor for me, because couples with enormous problems would come in and complain about each other and the relationship?but still want to make it work. ?They still loved each other. ?And they could usually tell you why. In other words, for all of the ways they drove each other crazy, they always had a reason that they were still together.

In my stories, relationships are usually messy. ?People say the wrong things, have affairs, and hurt each other?sometimes accidentally and sometimes on purpose. Ex-partners create havoc, hidden histories drive wedges, but in the end love always prevails for me. ?I like to pretend to be pragmatic and sensible, but the truth is that I'm a hopeless romantic, and in my stories, love really is the greatest power of all.

Ask yourself:

  • What is the absolute worst thing each partner could do to the other? (Usually the "worst thing" varies by character.) Why is that the worst?
  • Can you work that conflict into your story?
  • Why might your characters still want or need each other in spite of this betrayal?
  • Usually things are not "like new" after a betrayal?what are the lingering effects of having survived the conflict?

I'm most drawn to fictional relationships where there is a strong, identifiable reason for an attraction at the same time there are problems (internal or external to the relationship) that are trying to tear the couple apart. For me, the attraction to each other has to be stronger than the problems, but not by much. The characters have to keep coming together the way a pair of magnets will. ?They might push against each other, but inevitably, they snap together and hold on.

How about you? What are your secrets for making romantic plots and subplots work?

Anti-Obama doc highlights weak Hollywood newcomers

(AP) ? Hollywood may have run out of summer hits, but an anti-Obama documentary is helping to fill the gap.

Holdover movies easily topped the weekend box office again, led by Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables 2" at No. 1 for the second-straight weekend with $13.5 million.

The weekend's new wide releases were overshadowed by "2016: Obama's America," which expanded from limited to nationwide release and took in $6.2 million to finish at No. 8.

The documentary is a conservative critique of what the country would look like four years from now if President Barack Obama is re-elected.

Released by Rocky Mountain Pictures, "Obama's America" nearly matched the $6.3 million debut of the No. 7 movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's action tale "Premium Rush," a Sony release that played in more than twice as many theaters as the Obama documentary.

The weekend's other new wide releases opened weakly. Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's road-chase comedy "Hit & Run," released by Open Road Films, debuted at No. 10 with $4.7 million, and the Warner Bros. fright flick "The Apparition" opened at No. 12 with $3 million.

The weak openings are typical of late August, a dumping ground for movies without much audience appeal as the summer blockbuster season winds down and young viewers switch to back-to-school mode.

But with less competition from Hollywood releases, it also opens the door for surprise successes such as "Obama's America."

"It's extremely rare for a documentary to break into the top-10, but August can be a land of opportunity for smaller films," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Also, there's the fact that this is a very conservative film. Normally, it's Michael Moore-branded documentaries, the liberal documentaries that make all the money."

"Obama's America" opened in a handful of theaters in mid-July and did strong business as it gradually widened to more cities. It jumped into the top-10 this weekend as it expanded into 1,091 theaters, leading all other wide releases with an average of $5,717 a cinema.

That's a solid average, especially for a political documentary. But it pales next to the king of political documentaries, Moore's George W. Bush assault "Fahrenheit 9/11," which opened at No. 1 with $23.9 million in June 2004, averaging $27,558 in 868 theaters. "Fahrenheit 9/11" went on to become the top-grossing documentary ever with $119.1 million domestically.

"Obama's America" is based on the book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," written by Dinesh D'Souza, who co-directed the movie with John Sullivan.

The documentary now has climbed to a $9.1 million domestic total, with prospects for strong business as the Republican National Convention unfolds over the next few days.

D'Souza said Sunday that "Obama's America" will expand to more cities in the coming weeks and probably remain in theaters until early October, likely followed by a DVD release in the homestretch leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

Conservatives probably account for most of the documentary's audience so far, D'Souza said. But as with "Fahrenheit 9/11," which drew many conservatives out of curiosity, the attention "Obama's America" now is receiving could prompt left-leaning viewers to check it out, he said.

"What's happening is that people are really hungry for new information about Obama. There really is this sense that he remains an elusive figure," D'Souza said. "Then there's a second sense that the American dream is in the balance, the American dream is at stake, and that gives people a sense of anxiety about where the country is going."

Released by Lionsgate, "The Expendables 2" raised its domestic total to $52.3 million after two weekends.

In limited release, IFC Films' "Sleepwalk with Me" had a huge debut with $77,400 in a single New York City theater. Produced and co-written by Ira Glass of National Public Radio's "This American Life," ''Sleepwalk with Me" stars writer-director Mike Birbiglia in a semi-autobiographical story of a stand-up comic struggling with career and romance, along with bad bouts of sleepwalking.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Expendables 2," $13.5 million ($18.5 million international).

Take Control Of Your Money With These Tips - Total Vibration

When things are not going well financially, it is too easy to just try to ignore the problem. However, ignoring it will not work because money is a part of everyday life. This article offers valuable information that will help you to get on budget.

Your expenses and income should be used to plan out your budget. Begin by determining the aggregate amount of income that your family earns after taxes. It is necessary to include all types of income, no matter what the source. Next, make sure that the amount of money you are spending does not exceed how much you make each month.

After that, you need to write down all of your household expenses in list form. Do not forget vehicle costs and food and entertainment expenses. Make sure that this list reflects all of the money you spend.

Be sure to use real numbers when making a budget. You will find that you have unneeded expenses that you can probably eliminate. Stop eating at fast food joints can save some money.

Upgrading your appliances can help decrease your utility bills. You can also lower your electric bill by replacing your hot water heater and weatherizing your windows. Wait until your dishwasher is fully loaded to give your dishes a cleaning.

Update your appliances to energy-efficient versions. This may seem costly, but it saves money over time. Unplug the electrical cords from any appliances or electronics that are not being used. Before long, your reduced energy consumption will be apparent in your reduced energy bills.

To make sure that you are not losing heat because of your roof or insulation, upgrade these areas, especially if this is something that you have not done in a long time. You will definitely get a return for your investment with this upgrade.

The advice in this article can help you save money, and keep more of your income. Spend the money you have saved on home improvement projects on new appliances you need. You will be able to live more comfortably and make better plans for the future.

How To Find Design Ideas for Your Next Remodeling Project | My ...

You want to change the look and feel of your house, but you also want your remodeling job to look fresh for a number of years while complementing the existing features of your home. How do you choose the right project and design for you and your family?

First, make sure you take your family?s lifestyle into account when selecting an area of your home to remodel.? For example, if you get a lot of traffic through the house, consider hardwood floors. Families who frequently entertain in the kitchen may want to expand the room and add an island or some comfortable chairs. If your bathroom is the place where you escape the world, add a whirlpool tub or a deluxe shower.

After you?ve chosen an area of your home to remodel, the wide array of project options can be both dazzling and intimidating.? To get started, consult the resources below, which can give you specific ideas on how to turn your house into the dream home you?ve always wanted.

TV Shows:? Home & Garden Television (HGTV) features a number of shows on topics ranging from decorating to home improvement. To spark your creativity, watch projects evolve from start to finish on shows like ?My Big Amazing Renovation? and ?Curb Appeal?; check your local television guide for listings.

Magazines:? Magazines that cater to home improvement, lifestyle and remodeling can be an excellent source of ideas.? Page through publications such as Dwell, Home, House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, Food and Wine, Country Living, Ladies? Home Journal and Good Housekeeping to identify projects and materials that might work in your home.? Additionally, you can request a wide range of free or inexpensive literature by completing the mail-in coupons inserted in such publications.

Websites:? Surfing the Web is a great way to find ideas and research projects. Many remodelers, manufacturers and magazines host websites that feature project photos, buying guides and product information. Web directories also can help you find professional remodelers in your area ? be sure to check out the directory on MyFlatheadValleyHome.com and take a stroll through the Idea Gallery for project ideas and to find the local expert that make that idea a reality.

Sketches and Floor Plans:? No two remodeling projects are the same, but you can gain some insight into how another homeowner solved a space problem by carefully studying sketches and floor plans. If, like most people, you are easily confused by plans and drawings, imagine yourself in the middle of the room or space on the plan.

Books:? Browse a bookstore with a well-stocked home improvement section, but beware of books telling you to be your own remodeling contractor. Most remodeling projects call for a level of skill and work hours beyond those stated in these books. The job of a professional remodeler requires experience and competence in a wide range of disciplines, and unless you are highly skilled and licensed in all the trades, you can quickly get in over your head.

Newspapers:? Most newspapers publish regular sections devoted to real estate, home design and remodeling. Also, twice a year ? usually in the spring and fall ? many papers print special home improvement supplements. Each of these sections contains timely articles and useful advertisements on remodeling, home improvement, repair and maintenance.

Friends, Family and Neighbors:? Do you know someone who has recently remodeled their home in a style you admire? He or she may still have product manuals, magazines and other helpful information you can borrow, as well as practical advice drawn from his or her own experience.

Remodeling Professionals:? One of the advantages of choosing a remodeler early is gaining access to an extensive library of resources prior to starting a project. Once you?ve chosen a contractor, he or she usually can offer you a wide variety of materials, including product manuals, magazines, brochures and blueprints.

Manufacturers and Suppliers:? The most obvious place to find information about new products and how to use them is on manufacturers? Web sites and in magazine ads. Lumberyards, hardware stores and other suppliers also can be valuable sources of information. Many suppliers now offer home planning centers, where you can browse comfortably among the following:

??Plan books
??Product manuals
??Sourcebooks
??Building tips
??Magazines
??Brochures
??Directories of local remodelers and builders

Firsthand Observation:? Keep a loaded camera and some extra film in your vehicle. You never know when a trip to the grocery store might provide you a glimpse of just the right exterior door or window trim, so always be prepared.

Parade of Homes and Home & Garden Showcase Events: Last but definitely not least, be sure to attend the Flathead Parade of Homes each year in September and the Flathead Home & Garden Showcase each year in March to get inspired with local trends and the latest products and services. Talk with the professional, attend seminars and get a first hand look at local projects and design.

What the Supreme Court Did This Summer

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia takes part in an interview with Chris Wallace on 'FOX News Sunday'. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia takes part in an interview with Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday n July 27, 2012 in Washington, D.C.

Photograph by Paul Morigi/Getty Images.

It?s August. Do you know where your Supreme Court is?

A good bet is that none of the nine justices are in Washington, D.C.?As Chief Justice John Roberts once quipped: ?Only Supreme Court justices and schoolchildren are expected to and do take the entire summer off.??(Roberts made that statement while serving as an attorney in the Reagan Administration.)?The justices are free to leave town as soon as they issue their last decision of the term in late June, and they are usually not to be found back in the nation?s capital until the first Monday in October?the official start of the new Supreme Court term.?Many of the justices use this chunk of free time to travel, lecture, write books, and teach, among other activities.?This summer is no exception: Justice Antonin Scalia spent most of the summer teaching in Austria; Chief Justice Roberts chose to teach in Malta, while Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Justice Samuel Alito did the same in Italy.?Not only are these teaching gigs a delightful respite from the swampy heat of D.C., they also let the justices pad their wallets with about $20,000, a supplement to the justices? $213,000 salaries.

Should the leaders of the judicial branch be in a position to use ?summer? as a verb, particularly when they take advantage of the time off to moonlight as law professors??Or is the summer break a harmless perk?

Either way, the summer recess comes with some significant costs.?Because the justices do not meet to decide whether to grant or deny review in cases during the summer months, thousands of legal petitions pile up during their absence.?The court plows through this backlog at their first conference (aptly referred to as the ?long conference?) in the last week of September. But they obviously cannot give these petitions the same consideration as those that arrive later in the term. (For this reason, savvy appellate attorneys know that it is best to avoid filing petitions over the summer if they can.)

The impending summer recess can also force the court to rush decisions without taking the time to articulate their reasoning, as at least one scholar argues occurred in the Pentagon Papers case?a momentous case with serious national security implications that was decided in a three-paragraph, unsigned opinion in late June.?The summer break was behind the timing of this past term?s health care decision.?As was widely reported, a decision had to be made by the end of June because of Chief Justice Roberts? Malta trip in the first week of July.

When pressing issues arise during the recess, the matter is often handled by a single justice ?in chambers? who must make important decisions about whether to grant stays, injunctions, or extensions without consulting with his or her absent colleagues.?For example, Justice William Douglas issued an ?in chambers? order in August 1973, which put a stop to military operations in Cambodia.?He explained that he would normally have referred this question to the full court, but the summer recess made that ?impossible.??

The three-month break is particularly galling at a time when the Supreme Court decides fewer cases than any other court in modern times.?In recent years, the court has heard an average of about 80 cases a term, which is half the number they heard 20 years ago and makes up fewer than 1 percent of the approximately 10,000 review petitions they receive.?The rest of the federal judiciary does not get the same extended summer vacation, and they handle a great deal more cases.?It is also a little disconcerting that many of the justices use the time off to generate outside income.?Shouldn?t their time be filled by the job they are paid (by all of us year-round working taxpayers) to do??

Of course, the summer recess probably offers some important psychological benefits.?Hopefully, the justices use the break to reflect on the previous term and their role in our system of government.?Visits to foreign countries will likely broaden what otherwise might become parochial perspectives.?And perhaps most important, it is a chance for the nine scorpions to scuttle out of their bottle and get a much-needed respite from each other.?Remember, these jobs come with a life tenure, which means that most of the justices will sit together for decades.?(Imagine being forced to work closely with the same annoying co-worker for the rest of your life.)

Still, it?s worth remembering that the justices did not always have it so good.?In 1789, Congress required the very first Supreme Court to meet in August for the start of its term?and this in an era without air conditioning.?Worse, that Congress assigned the justices double-duty as circuit court judges:?In addition to deciding cases as members of the Supreme Court, the justices were required to ?ride circuit? around the United States to hear cases in their capacity as lower court judges.?Circuit riding continued for the next 100 years.???

So perhaps Congress should abolish the court?s three-month recess, and maybe even reinstate circuit riding, as a few scholars have already suggested.?Of course, these hardships will make a job on the Supreme Court less attractive than it is today.?That was certainly the case in 1801, when President John Adams was turned down by his first choice for chief justice before finally convincing John Marshall to accept the post.?(Former Chief Justice John Jay declined Adams? nomination to serve in that position again, saying that the office lacked ?dignity.?)?If nothing else, abolishing the justices? summer vacation might lead to greater turnover on the high court?a possibility that might appeal to Democrats, Republicans, and any justice who?d rather spend more time on the Mediterranean.

Horse Racing Tips: How to Select a Winning Horse

Just like any other gambling game, horse racing is also a game of luck. We can't control our luck but instead, we can increase our chances of winning. As a beginner, we might find ourselves confused and overwhelmed with so many things to look out for. Getting to know more about the game by betting on any setting would teach the ropes of success. It requires dedication, passion and patience as luck would be in your favour. Learn some horse racing tips by registering on punters lounges online--a forum for all types of punters who are passionate about the race. You will learn effective ways to bet on the right stallion and avoid any rip-offs in racing.

Selecting a champion stallion in a race is both fun and challenging. It is hard to manage particularly if you have little experience in betting and the game itself. Basically, choosing the right one as a winner also requires picking the right trainer and jockey. Many horses are also believed that even they are as beautiful and amazing on the track but without the right training or having a wrong jockey, they can't succeed in winning and reaching their full capabilities. Learning the background of the trainer like his skills and experience is essential to any horse and jockey. This is why many punters would visit the track early and examine the animal as this gives them the idea of how the event would end. Most of the time, examining the trainer's progress is not enough, for a lot of time and effort, as his past performance would give a good indication as to how stable and consistent his trained stallion on the track. Next person to research on is the jockey's talent. His/her skills, experience and past performances would determine his/her capability to surpass the rest of his competitors. Check if the current jockey has ridden this particular stallion before and up to what distances did the pair race its best and worst. Once you reviewed the stallions' health and high breed history, compare achievement races. It would help you narrow down your choices and gain confidence in winning.

Horses play the biggest role in the race. You also need to understand that not all punters can predict the winner in every event. That is why you should have a strategy before betting on any category. If the stallion is a crowd favourite surely it has been a winner and you've got bigger chance to win the event. Grab any free racing tips online to increase your odds of winning more money and enjoy it at the same time.

Pussy Riot 2.0: German Catholic Church goes after copycats

Three years in prison have become a closer prospect for some German followers of Russian punk band Pussy Riot. The Catholic Church has pressed charges against Cologne Cathedral intruders, who now face longer prison terms than their heroes.

?The three protesters have been charged with disturbing a religious service which, according to German law, could mean up to three years in jail.

"The right to demonstration cannot be set above the right to religious freedom and the religious feelings of the congregation,? Cologne Cathedral?s dean told the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper.

Three women from Pussy Riot received a two-year prison sentence for hooliganism over their controversial performance in Russia?s central Cathedral of Jesus Christ the Savior.

"The peace of Cologne Cathedral was disturbed?? we can't and won't accept this," said Dean Robert Kleine to the newspaper.

On August 20, three Germans?? two men, aged 23 and 25, and a 20-year-old woman?? stormed the cathedral in the city of Cologne to stage a performance inside the prayer hall similar to the one by Pussy Riot.

They were dressed Pussy Riot-style, with colored balaclavas covering their heads.

The group was shouting slogans, distributing flyers and singing. They had brought a banner demanding ?Free Pussy Riot and all prisoners?.

The show by three Cologne protesters lasted for less than a minute before cathedral wardens dragged them outside.

Several other Pussy Riot protests were registered across Germany on August 20, the day the verdict in the Pussy Riot case was announced.

The bishop of Cologne Cathedral, Heiner Koch, who witnessed the assault on his domain, promised later to include the demonstrators' cause, Pussy Riot and the people of Russia in his service prayer.

The Cologne Pussy Riot followers? case clearly demonstrates the truth of the adage that ?one shall not make for himself an idol??? at least without reading the criminal code first.

Measure of coronary artery calcium linked with improved prediction of cardiovascular disease risk

Measure of coronary artery calcium linked with improved prediction of cardiovascular disease risk

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

In a comparison of novel cardiovascular risk markers, coronary artery calcium, ankle-brachial index, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and family history were independent predictors of coronary heart disease/cardiovascular disease in intermediate-risk individuals beyond traditional risk factors, with coronary artery calcium providing superior discrimination and risk reclassification compared with other risk markers, according to a study in JAMA.

"Current trends in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) emphasize the need to treat individuals based on their global cardiovascular risk. Accordingly, practice guidelines recommend approaches to classify individuals as high, intermediate, or low risk using the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) or other similar CVD risk prediction models. However, there is increasing recognition of the imprecision of these classifications such that the intermediate-risk group actually represents a composite of higher-risk individuals for whom more aggressive (i.e., drug) therapy might be indicated. The intermediate-risk group also contains lower-risk individuals in whom CVD might be managed with lifestyle measures alone. This recognition has motivated researchers to identify markers that could offer greater discrimination of higher- and lower-risk patients within the intermediate-risk group," according to background information in the article.

"Risk markers including coronary artery calcium (CAC), carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), ankle-brachial index (ABI), brachial flow-mediated dilation (FMD), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), and family history of coronary heart disease (CHD) have been reported to improve on the Framingham Risk Score for prediction of CHD, but there are no direct comparisons of these markers for risk prediction in a single cohort," the authors write.

Joseph Yeboah, M.D., M.S., of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C., and colleagues assessed the improvements in CHD/CVD prediction accuracy and reclassification to high- and low-risk categories using CIMT, CAC, FMD, ABI, high-sensitivity CRP, and family history of CHD in asymptomatic adults classified as intermediate risk who participated in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). Of 6,814 MESA participants from 6 U.S. field centers, 1,330 were intermediate risk, without diabetes mellitus, and had complete data on all 6 markers. Recruitment spanned July 2000 to September 2002, with follow-up through May 2011. Analysis was conducted to compare incremental contributions of each marker when added to the FRS, plus race/ethnicity. Incident CHD was defined as heart attack, angina followed by revascularization, resuscitated cardiac arrest, or CHD death. Incident CVD additionally included stroke or CVD death.

After a median (midpoint) follow-up of 7.6 years, 94 participants (7.1 percent) experienced a CHD event and 123 (9.2 percent) experienced a CVD event. After analyses, the researchers found that each of the novel risk markers was associated with incident CHD; however, after adjusting for confounders, the associations with CIMT and FMD were no longer significant. Among all of the risk markers, CAC had the strongest association. Similarly, for incident CVD, each of the markers was associated with events except high-sensitivity CRP. However, after adjusting for confounders, the associations between CIMT and FMD were no longer significant. CAC also had the strongest association in the multivariable models for CVD.

"The current study shows that among 6 of the most promising novel risk markers, CAC provides the highest improvement in discrimination over the FRS and Reynolds score (RS) in individuals classified as intermediate risk. The present study provides additional support for the use of CAC as a tool for refining cardiovascular risk prediction in individuals classified as intermediate risk by the FRS or the RS," the authors write. "Additional research is warranted to explore further both the costs and benefits of CAC screening in intermediate-risk individuals."

Editorial: Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in the 21st Century

In an accompanying editorial, J. Michael Gaziano, M.D., M.P.H., of the Boston VA Healthcare System, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, (and Contributing Editor, JAMA), and Peter W. F. Wilson, M.D., of the Atlanta VA Medical Center and Emory Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute, comment on the two studies in this issue of JAMA on assessing cardiovascular risk.

"These reports illustrate the means by which the enhancement of a given model such as FRS with additional data is evaluated. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve has been used for many diagnostic tests. A clinically useful approach describes the proportion of individuals who are reclassified, known as the net reclassification index. However, not all reclassifications are created equally. Refining risk estimation at the low or high end of the risk spectrum is not helpful because it will not likely alter management. On the other hand, reclassification can assist in decision making for patients who are near clinical decision boundaries. For this reason, both studies provided information on the reclassification that occurred among those at 5 percent to 20 percent risk. In this intermediate range, risk estimates inform clinical decisions about certain interventions."
