Loved ones salute New Zealand dad killed by shark

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? About 150 friends and family of Adam Strange wrote messages to him in the sand and stepped into the water Thursday at a New Zealand beach to say goodbye a day after he was killed by a large shark while training for an endurance swim.

Strange, 46, was an award-winning television and short film director and the father of a 2-year-old girl. He was swimming near popular Muriwai Beach on Wednesday when he was attacked by the shark that was possibly 14 feet (4 meters) long. Surf lifesavers say they are convinced it was a great white shark.

Police attempting to save him raced out in inflatable boats and fired gunshots at the enormous predator, which they say rolled away and disappeared. They couldn't confirm if they'd killed it. Police were able to recover Strange's body.

Muriwai will remained closed for swimming until Saturday after the fatal attack, one of only about a dozen in New Zealand in the past 180 years.

Friend Adam Stevens said the Thursday beach service was run by indigenous Maori who removed the "tapu" or spiritual restriction at the beach. He said it was a "perfect tribute" to a man who spent much of his time swimming and surfing.

"He was a very robust, big, barrel-chested surfer," Stevens said. "He was basically completely obsessed with the ocean, with paddle boards and body surfing, everything. His garage was like a museum of surf craft."

According to Police Inspector Shawn Rutene, Strange was about 200 meters (650 feet) from the shore when he was attacked by a shark that police estimated was up to four meters (14 feet) long.

Stevens said his friend was planning to swim about 1 ? kilometers (one mile) Wednesday as he tested new goggles and trained for an annual endurance swim from Auckland to Rangitoto Island. The 4.5 kilometer (2.8 mile) swim takes place on Sunday.

"I surfed with him the day before," Stevens said. "He wasn't that pleased with his fitness level but was just getting into the right headspace and finding the motivation to get out there."

Pio Mose, who was fishing at the beach Wednesday, told the New Zealand Herald newspaper he saw Strange struggle against the huge shark. Mose yelled at Strange to swim to the rocks, but it was too late.

"All of a sudden there was blood everywhere," Mose said. "I was shaking, scared, panicked."

About 200 people had been enjoying the beach during the Southern Hemisphere summer at the time of the attack.

Stevens said he's been comforting Strange's wife Meg and their daughter since the accident. He said the girl is too young to understand what has happened but is aware of the emotions.

On his website, Strange says: "When I get a spare 5 minutes, I like to make a fruit smoothy, surf some big waves out on the West Coast, point my skis down a mountain with Meg, haul my mountain bike up and down a few hills, drink some pinot while scratching away at a film script ... If I get a spare 5 minutes ..."

Stevens said his friend, whom he's known about 15 years, was very creative and always positive.

"He lived in the moment brilliantly. It was completely infectious," Stevens said. "He feasted on the details."

Stevens said he and Strange worked alongside each other for a number of years at a film production company, Silverscreen.

On his site, Strange said he studied as a graphic designer and art director before getting into directing. He said he'd worked on commercials all over the world and had been a finalist for a number of advertising awards.

Strange won a Crystal Bear award at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival for a short film called "Aphrodite's Farm," a magical tale set on a dairy farm in the 1930s.

Tim Jago, chairman of the Muriwai Lifeguard Service, said a number of beaches near Muriwai reopened Thursday and that Muriwai would open for beach visits Friday and then swimming on Saturday. He said the closure at this point is to give surf lifesavers a break and he doesn't fear a repeat attack.

"We are quite comfortable the beast is dead," he said. "Footage from a helicopter indicates that when the shark rolled over and rolled off, it also sank to bottom."

Jago said witnesses spotted one or two other large sharks circling at the time of the attack, but that no sharks have been seen in the area since then.

Police did not say what species of shark was involved in the attack. Clinton Duffy, a shark expert with the Department of Conservation, said New Zealand is a hotspot for great white sharks, and other potentially lethal species also inhabit the waters.

Attacks are rare. Duffy estimated that only 12 to 14 people have been killed by sharks in New Zealand since record keeping began in the 1830s.

"There are much lower levels of shark attacks here than in Australia," he said. "It's possibly a function of how many people are in the water" in New Zealand's cooler climate.

He said that during the Southern Hemisphere summer, sharks often come in closer to shore to feed and to give birth, although that doesn't necessarily equate to a greater risk of attack.

"Ninety-nine percent of the time they ignore people," he said. "Sometimes, people get bitten."

Around the world, sharks attacked humans 80 times last year, and seven people were killed, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. The death toll was lower than it was in 2011 but higher than the average of 4.4 from 2001 to 2010.

Coroner vows open inquiry into Litvinenko death

LONDON (Reuters) - A British coroner said on Wednesday he would hold an open and "fearless" inquiry into the murder in 2006 of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko after Britain asked for sensitive information about the death to be kept secret.

Litvinenko, 43, who had been granted British citizenship and had become a vocal critic of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, died after someone slipped polonium-210, a rare radioactive isotope, into his cup of tea at a plush London hotel.

At a pre-inquest hearing on Tuesday, lawyers for the British government argued information it held should be subject to a public interest immunity (PII) certificate, barring disclosure which they said would seriously harm national security.

The lawyer for Litvinenko's family argued Britain was trying to hide details of his work for its MI6 intelligence service, and material which showed Russia was behind his death, because London wanted to protect lucrative Russian trade deals.

Ties between Britain and Russia fell to a post-Cold War low in the immediate aftermath of Litvinenko's death, but British Prime Minister David Cameron has tried to improve relations and strengthen business links since coming to power in 2010.

The coroner, High Court judge Robert Owen, ruled he would go ahead with private hearings to consider the government's request, but said he would only allow material to be kept secret where that served the public interest better than disclosure.

He promised the PII request from British Foreign Secretary William Hague would be "subjected to the most stringent and critical examination".

"It is my duty to carry out a full, fearless and independent investigation into the circumstances of the death of Mr Litvinenko. That, I intend to do," Owen told Wednesday's hearing at London's Royal Courts of Justice.

"TRANSPARENCY"

"(The inquest) will be conducted with the greatest possible degree of openness and transparency," Owen said.

Under British law, inquests conducted by coroners are held when a person dies unexpectedly to determine the cause of death.

Owen said he would go ahead with closed hearings this week when the government will put forward its case why certain material should be withheld from the inquest.

Anything that is subject to PII would be excluded from evidence and would not form part of Owen's final judgement.

Ben Emmerson, the lawyer for Litvinenko's widow Marina, said on Tuesday this could result in a situation where Owen could be shown secret evidence which conclusively showed the Kremlin was complicit in murder, but would then have to issue a public judgment which exonerated Russia of any involvement.

A previous hearing has already been told the British government possessed information which established "a prima facie case" that the Russian state was behind the killing.

British police and prosecutors have also said there was enough evidence to charge two former KGB agents, Andrei Lugovoy and Dmitry Kovtun, with murder. Lugovoy denies any involvement and Moscow has repeatedly dismissed allegations it ordered Litvinenko's death to silence him.

Marina Litvinenko said although Owen's decision was not ideal, she had faith in his commitment that crucial facts about her husband's death would not be covered up.

"I believe he will do exactly what he said to me," she told reporters. "I do trust him. I believe he is still in the same position that if he sees evidence the Russian state is behind the crime he will use it."

Owen said the next hearing to decide when the full inquest will start would take place on March 14.

missing-anchorSANTA BARBARA ? A television news anchor for KEYT in Santa Barbara has returned home hours after being reported missing by her family.

Concerned family members reported, Paula Lopez, missing just after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.

After receiving the call, deputies responded to her home and began searching.

Two K-9 units and a Santa Barbara County Air Support Unit helicopter were called in to assist with the search of her home and surrounding area.

At around 5:30 pm tonight her family members called Santa Barbara County Sheriff?s Public Safety Dispatch to report that she is home and safe.

When Deputies responded to her residence they confirmed she was there and no longer missing.

Authorities are not commenting on the reasons surrounding why Lopez went missing, saying it is a private family matter.

According to the Santa Barbara Sheriff?s department, her last known location was at her home located near Cathedral Oaks Road and North San Marcos Road.

KEYT General Manager Mark Danielson released a statement earlier in the day saying, ?We have been in touch with her family and know they, as well as local authorities, are doing everything possible to find her safe and sound. It is clearly a difficult time for her family and our own family at KEYT.?

Lopez, who spent six years at KCAL-TV Channel 9 in Los Angeles, co-anchors the Santa Barbara station?s 11 p.m. broadcast.

She is married to Presiding Judge of Santa Barbara Superior Court, Frank Ochoa.

Munoz leads after 1st round at HSBC Champions

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Spain's Azahara Munoz shot a 7-under 65 Thursday for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the HSBC Women's Champions, which features 17 of the top 20 LPGA players.

Munoz played in the day's first group and finished with seven birdies. Five players at Sentosa Golf Club shared second at 67: Stacy Lewis, Karin Sjodin, Lizette Salas, Pornanong Phatlum and Sun Young Yoo.

Munoz is coming off her strongest season on tour, winning her first title at the Sybase Match Play Championship and enjoying nine top-10 finishes.

"I don't know what it is but my best three rounds on tour have been first tee time," she said. "I really like it. You don't have to wait, it's super nice, the greens are perfect. I think it gets me going."

Paula Creamer was in a four-way tie at 68 despite an injured right shoulder from a car accident. The five-car accident happened on the way to the airport after the Honda LPGA tournament in Thailand.

Two other players, Ai Miyazato and Suzann Pettersen, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Miyazato pulled out of the HSBC Champions on Wednesday, citing stiffness in her back, neck and shoulder.

Also at 68 were top-ranked Yani Tseng of Taiwan, Danielle Kang and Chella Choi.

Tseng, a five-time major winner, was five shots off the lead before sinking a 25-foot putt for eagle on the 18th hole. Tseng hasn't won a tournament in nearly a year, but she has started the 2013 season with a second-place finish at the Australian Open and a tie for third at Thailand last weekend.

She said she made a bet with her manager, Naya Hsu, on Thursday morning to better motivate herself. If she scored a 68 or better, Hsu agreed to go skydiving with her in Hawaii.

"When that putt dropped in, I was so happy," Tseng said. "I was looking for her. I saw her face, I think she's going to cry.

"I think it feels good because I haven't had that feeling for a long time," she said. "The last two weeks, kind of a little rushed, trying to play well on the first day. And today I've been patient because I know it's only the first day, I still have three days left."

Creamer was just happy to be on the course after her accident. She said she jammed her shoulder when she hit the dashboard of the car and suffered whiplash after slamming her head off the headrest.

"At the beginning of the round, I really couldn't feel my right side and I didn't know if I was going to be able to even go," she said. "I thought if I could get through the first five holes, I would be OK. I have no expectations whatsoever this week," she said.

Second-ranked Na Yeon Choi, who is trying to close in on Tseng's No. 1 ranking, shot a 69. Michelle Wie, South Korea's Jiyai Shin and Australia's Karrie Webb were at 71, with Pettersen at 73. Defending champion Angela Stanford had a quadruple bogey on the par-4 13th en route to a 76.

The country says it will be expanding FTTH connections by 35 million households in 2013, putting 4M broadband connections (or faster) in over 70 percent of Chinese households. Is Affiliate Marketing Just A Big Scam? - Internet Marketing - HRF ...

The ones at the top (the ones who create the "programs") can make good money, primarily by selling the "rights" to redistribute their program to their affiliates, and through their share of the revenue when an affiliate actually generates a sale. This is why they work so hard to build up such huge mailing lists and to generate so much hype for each new product launch -- so when their latest, greatest "fool proof program" guaranteed to make money for everyone with little to no effort required hits the streets, they'll have tons of affiliates out there promoting it. It's a numbers game. Your individual affiilates don't have to perform all that well, as long as in the aggregate they manage to sell a couple of thousand of each product, and you can still be sitting pretty at the pinnacle of the pyramid.

The thing is, you know, I honestly can't recall a single instance of one of these gurus bragging about making money from actually following the steps in one of the programs they're selling. They just carry on about how much money they've made (and you, as their affiliate, can in theory make) by getting other suckers people to buy their "fool-proof" program. I guess attempting to actually put the program into action is for the "little people" or something?

So, ultimately, what they're really selling is NOT the info product, it's the ability to make a finder's fee for referring purchasers to the "info product" they produced. (Or in some cases -- and for considerably more money -- the ability to directly resell the info product itself.)

As Jill says, very few of the individual affiliates actually make anything from selling these "info products," and even fewer actually implement the program itself. Heck, a lot of them never even purchase or read the program they're promoting.? The whole "insider secret fool-proof program to skyrocket your income" part is almost entirely hypothetical, since the only money that generally gets made is from selling the info product that tells you how to make the money, not from actually doing the alleged money-making thing. (Does that make sense?)

There are some affiliates who make good money. For the most part, though, the ones that do are marketing things other than these "internet marketing guru info products." They market things that offer real value. And they go way "above and beyond" to create value-added marketing that informs, engages and entertains, rather than just reposting a "professionally written sales page" provided by the seller.

From what I've seen, it isn't impossible to make money as an affiliate marketer. But it's not nearly as much of a sure thing as the info guru marketers make it seem. IMO, in general it's like many things in life: one will get out of it roughly in proportion to what one puts in. :)

Blueprint for an artificial brain: Scientists experiment with memristors that imitate natural nerves

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Scientists have long been dreaming about building a computer that would work like a brain. This is because a brain is far more energy-saving than a computer, it can learn by itself, and it doesn't need any programming. Privatdozent [senior lecturer] Dr. Andy Thomas from Bielefeld University's Faculty of Physics is experimenting with memristors -- electronic microcomponents that imitate natural nerves. Thomas and his colleagues have demonstrated that they could do this a year ago. They constructed a memristor that is capable of learning. Andy Thomas is now using his memristors as key components in a blueprint for an artificial brain.

He will be presenting his results at the beginning of March in the print edition of the Journal of Physics published by the Institute of Physics in London.

Memristors are made of fine nanolayers and can be used to connect electric circuits. For several years now, the memristor has been considered to be the electronic equivalent of the synapse. Synapses are, so to speak, the bridges across which nerve cells (neurons) contact each other. Their connections increase in strength the more often they are used. Usually, one nerve cell is connected to other nerve cells across thousands of synapses.

Like synapses, memristors learn from earlier impulses. In their case, these are electrical impulses that (as yet) do not come from nerve cells but from the electric circuits to which they are connected. The amount of current a memristor allows to pass depends on how strong the current was that flowed through it in the past and how long it was exposed to it.

Andy Thomas explains that because of their similarity to synapses, memristors are particularly suitable for building an artificial brain -- a new generation of computers. 'They allow us to construct extremely energy-efficient and robust processors that are able to learn by themselves.' Based on his own experiments and research findings from biology and physics, his article is the first to summarize which principles taken from nature need to be transferred to technological systems if such a neuromorphic (nerve like) computer is to function. Such principles are that memristors, just like synapses, have to 'note' earlier impulses, and that neurons react to an impulse only when it passes a certain threshold.

Thanks to these properties, synapses can be used to reconstruct the brain process responsible for learning, says Andy Thomas. He takes the classic psychological experiment with Pavlov's dog as an example. The experiment shows how you can link the natural reaction to a stimulus that elicits a reflex response with what is initially a neutral stimulus -- this is how learning takes place. If the dog sees food, it reacts by salivating. If the dog hears a bell ring every time it sees food, this neutral stimulus will become linked to the stimulus eliciting a reflex response. As a result, the dog will also salivate when it hears only the bell ringing and no food is in sight. The reason for this is that the nerve cells in the brain that transport the stimulus eliciting a reflex response have strong synaptic links with the nerve cells that trigger the reaction.

If the neutral bell-ringing stimulus is introduced at the same time as the food stimulus, the dog will learn. The control mechanism in the brain now assumes that the nerve cells transporting the neutral stimulus (bell ringing) are also responsible for the reaction -- the link between the actually 'neutral' nerve cell and the 'salivation' nerve cell also becomes stronger. This link can be trained by repeatedly bringing together the stimulus eliciting a reflex response and the neutral stimulus. 'You can also construct such a circuit with memristors -- this is a first step towards a neuromorphic processor,' says Andy Thomas.

'This is all possible because a memristor can store information more precisely than the bits on which previous computer processors have been based,' says Thomas. Both a memristor and a bit work with electrical impulses. However, a bit does not allow any fine adjustment -- it can only work with 'on' and 'off'. In contrast, a memristor can raise or lower its resistance continuously. 'This is how memristors deliver a basis for the gradual learning and forgetting of an artificial brain,' explains Thomas.
