Pasco County has rejected an offer by the Porter family of Wesley Chapel to use $14 million in tourism taxes to design, construct and operate a sports complex.
The complex would include 20 fields and be located on 160 acres donated by the family, the Tampa Bay Times said.
The land, once a cattle ranch, will be turned into a complex known as the Fields at Wiregrass. The county may now open talks with another bidder on the project, Blue Marble Strategic, a Tampa company. Blue Marble is asking for $5 million to $6 million in tourism tax dollars, the Times said. The remainder of the funding for the complex will come from private sources.
The Porters own 5,000 acres of land and have overseen the development of The Shops at Wiregrass and the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, according to an earlier story in the Tampa Tribune.
