Lecture delivered at the launch of the book, Artists Remember; Artists Narrate: Memory and Representation in Sri Lankan Visual Arts (Colombo Institute and Theertha, Colombo 2012; ISBN 978?955?4501-00-3)?at the Post Graduate Institute of Archeology, Colombo, 28^thSeptember 2012.

As to why art is created, there could possibly be an inexorable series of answers. Some could be mystical-conjectural alluding to the relation between artistic creativity and the divine; some other could refer to the political economy of imagination, creation and consumption. In addition to this, there has been already an unresolved tension between ?art for the world? and ?art for the sake of art?; and indeed it is also possible to say today that art is primarily for artists? sake.?Sasanka Perera?takes an intellectual plunge into the visual art from Sri Lanka and ferrets out a few novel answers by far untold. Thereby he deftly breathes new lease of life into the enterprise of social anthropology by studying art history at the juncture in history which some anthropologists have elsewhere termed ?critical moments?. In very much a modern society, with deceitfully advanced capitalism at its best, and an intriguingly desperate state struggling to assert its supremacy at its worst, social anthropology is enjoined with the daunting task of locating human history in the middle of situations of crises; and of course thereby a harmony between the intellectually separated disciplines of sociology and history, politics and economics, are pushed for a much needed alliance. Doing the same, with erudition of scholarship and sophistication of his craft, and yet in the linguistic register of the ordinary, Sasanka Perera reaffirms the slogan that originated in feminist scholarship-?personal is political. It however is not all that his monograph titled?Artists Remember; Artists Narrate: Memory and Representation in Sri Lankan Visual Arts?eloquently promises and efficiently delivers. Perera enriches the feminist slogan by adroitly reversing the order-?the political is personal too. The dialectic of personal and political underpins the art scene in Sri Lanka. It is this phenomenon, a philosophic-theoretical premium of this monograph, that renders it distinguishable from the attempts at doing art history in the region. While art historians? incestuous intimacy with the ?good-old days? is never ending, especially due to the vested interest of ideological state apparatus, this book confirms a possibility of liberation from the prison of formulaic scholarship. Without compromising the aesthetic appeals of the visual art, this monograph underscores the social history in the backdrop of each creation. Without ignoring the details of creating and exhibiting, this monograph maintains its focus on the relationship between the biographical and the historical. It echoes the classical dictum of C. Wright Mills, the American sociologist who propounded the idea of sociological imagination at the dusk of Second World War, ?when wars happen, an insurance salesman becomes a rocket launcher; a store clerk, a radar man; a wife lives alone; a child grows up without a father. Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both?. Needless to say, it summons utmost conviction and courage to present knowledge without discriminating between what is pleasant and what is unpleasant.Sasanka Perera accomplishes the feat nearly in entirety.

Volkswagen mulls new midsize SUV for U.S.

German automaker Volkswagen AG is considering the introduction of a new midsize SUV for the North American market, and its existing Tennessee plant is a contender for building it.?

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn told reporters in New York on Tuesday that a decision on whether to build the new model will be made soon, but probably not before the end of the year.?

"If we produce the car, Chattanooga would certainly present itself as an option for doing the whole thing," Winterkorn told reporters in German. But he said other locations would also be considered to build the SUV, which would come in between VW's existing Tiguan and Touareg models.

Volkswagen subsidiary Audi in April announced plans to build its first North American plant in Mexico. Volkswagen executives have said that decision was based in large part on Mexico's wider array of trade agreements that would help spur exports.

Winterkorn in prepared remarks lauded VW's experience in building Passat sedans at the Chattanooga plant that opened last year and stressed that the U.S. remains a pillar in the company's global growth strategy.

The $1 billion Chattanooga plant is expected to build 180,000 vehicles next year and has a maximum capacity of 220,000 in its current configuration.

Winterkorn said Volkswagen expects that all Volkswagen brands, including Audi and Porsche, will set a record sales of 500,000 vehicles in the U.S. this year. VW-branded vehicles sales grew 37 percent through September to 323,000.

Volkswagen announced Wednesday that third-quarter profits grew 58 percent to $14.8 billion, thanks to an accounting boost from its takeover of Porsche. The company reported strong sales in the U.S., its home market of Germany and in China.

Winterkorn was in New York on Tuesday to receive an award from Johns Hopkins University's American Institute for Contemporary German Studies. In his speech, Winterkorn acknowledged difficult economic conditions in Europe, but said he was optimistic about the automotive sector.

"Regardless of what happens in the near future, in the medium and long term this industry is a growth industry," Winterkorn said. "Worldwide and in America."

The company strategy of becoming the world's largest automaker by 2018 remains in place, and "the United States has a crucial role to play on this journey," he said.?

ARLINGTON, Va.Adm. Mark Ferguson, vice chief of naval operations, headlined the opening of the ONR (Office of Naval Research) Naval S&T (science and technology) Partnership Conference and ASNE Expo Oct. 22, 2012, and highlighted the importance of innovative S&T programs being developed by the Navy. He also offered a revealing look at the potential future for the Navy if sequestration, or automatic defense cuts, goes into effect in January.

Speaking to a capacity crowd as keynote speaker, Ferguson said the Navy is already working hard to do more across the globewith less resources. "The implications of trying to absorb a 9.4 percent cut on top of the significant reductions we've already done in fiscal year 2013 budgets, will have a very significant impact on the workforce, on the research and development (R&D) accountson everything," said Ferguson.

Ferguson's wide-ranging talk addressed an array of topics relating to ONR's pioneering work in S&T research. The vice chief applauded ONR-led efforts to improve warfighter capabilities in programs such as the Electromagnetic Railgun, ballistic missile defense, cyber defense and more.

These kinds of technologies, he said, are "game-changers." And in spite of current fiscal austerity, he stressed that the Department of Navy's leadership recognizes the importance of S&T research for the future of the service.

"We're going to be smaller as we go forward," he said, regardless of whatever decisions are made on sequestration. "We're going to be leaner. But in the same breath we have to be technologically advanced. We have to make sure that we put the best technology we have into the hands of our warfighters.

"That's our promise to future generations."

Without some sort of adjustment by Congress, currently the subject of discussion on Capitol Hill, the nearly 10 percent across-the-board Department of Defense budget cuts are slated to commence in 2013 and continue for 10 years.

The admiral stated he is personally hopeful lawmakers will moderate the cuts before they kick in, but noted that if no adjustments are made, the long-term as well as immediate effect on the Navy will be heavy.

"If you project out 10 yearsremember the budget control act talks about 10 years of reductions now you start talking about a fleet reduced to about 230-235 ships," he said. "Now you start talking about reduction of manpower commensurate with that. Now you start talking about the reduction of money going to warfare centers, to R&D efforts."

Ferguson's talk also emphasized the Navy's commitment to promoting programs aimed at getting young people involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

He said he will chair a committee to bring together industry, academic and service leaders to coordinate STEM support.

Energy Highway Task Force releases ?blueprint? for NY - The Buzz ...

Gov. Andrew Cuomo?s Energy Highway Task Force released its plan Monday to add up to 3,200 megawatts of new electricity generation and transmission capacity in the state.

The task force reviewed 130 ideas submitted by 85 entities to formulate its plan, which calls for $1 billion in new transmission lines, $675 million in new renewable energy generation, $2.5 billion for modernizing existing power plants and building new ones, $250 million for ?smart grid? projects that make the electrical system more efficient and the acceleration of $1.3 billion in transmission and distribution upgrades.

Although most of the money would come from the private sector, state-run utilities such as the New York Power Authority and the Long Island Power Authority would play a role. Studies of the potential for offshore wind farms in the Atlantic Ocean would also be undertaken.

You will never improve sales performance by managing your people with sales assignments. Sales Managers must change their management style from managing people to coaching before they will see long term sales transformation.

Although sales assignments are a critical tool in every Sales Manager?s tool belt, these assignments only assist managers and sales people in assessing accountability to the organization.

What is a sales assignment?

Let?s make a few assumptions: your organization provides quality products backed with quality service; you have hired a quality sales team, and every meeting with your sales team members you go through the checklist of items: new opportunities, new proposals submitted, conversion rates, closing ratios, contacts made, action items not met, and additional follow-up actions items assigned. Your sales people know the drill. They show up with the appropriate responses to every question you throw at them. As the Sales Manager you look for holes in their responses. When a hole is revealed, you direct the sales person to fill those holes with a list of follow-up items we call ?sales assignments.?

There is nothing about sales assignments your staff doesn?t already know how to do. In fact, sales assignments are nothing more than making sure your sales people are doing their assigned job. Follow up with a client on a proposal? Got it! Need to put in a few more hours next week to wrap up a proposal? Done! A fellow team member is ahead by a couple sales? Bring it!

The problem with sales assignments is they don?t impact underlying skills or knowledge base, nor do they provide opportunities for real improvement or sales development. Every sales person has room for improvement. ?Development assignments? are coaching assignments given to build on current strengths and improve weaknesses. Consistent development assignments build on knowledge, skill, commitment, and capacity.

What is a development assignment?

Development assignments are not workshops, seminars, or other short-term in-depth programs where a lot of information is given at one time. Development assignments are learning assignments created to develop? skill or knowledge. These assignments are designed to provide small incremental improvement. They are items a sales person can do without creating added ?chores? to their to-do list. Development assignments are logical solutions to build on knowledge or fill a skill gap.

Why is it important to understand the difference between a sales assignment and a development assignment? Eventually new products come out, a new competitor on the street, markets shift, products change, innovation happens. To stay ahead of the market, Sales Managers must develop sales people by providing the necessary skills to adapt to quickly changing environments. Sales assignments do not prepare or develop staff to adapt.

Sensex falls on earnings caution; ITC hits record high

MUMBAI (Reuters) - The BSE Sensex fell on Friday as Reliance Industries extended a recent losing run on continued worries about the outlook for its refining margins and as recently outperforming financial stocks such as HDFC were hit by profit-taking.

However gains in ITC Ltd to a record high capped broader losses after the cigarette maker posted a 22 percent surge in July-September earnings despite the challenge of higher taxes and tighter anti-smoking rules in several states.

Indian shares have struggled recently, with the Sensex down 0.4 percent this month after rallying 7.7 percent in September, as the impact from the government's fiscal and economic reforms fade.

Investors are holding hope the Reserve Bank of India will cut interest rates at its policy review on October 30, although most analysts expect only a token 25 basis point cut in the cash reserve ratio, or the amount of deposits lenders must keep with the central bank.

"For the week, the Sensex has ended lower on the back of profit booking and absence of fresh triggers for the market," said Sanjeev Zarbade, Vice President of the Private Client Group Research at Kotak Securities, in an emailed note.

The Sensex fell 0.58 percent, or 109.62 points, to 18,682.31. The index rose 0.04 percent for the week.

The 50-share Nifty lost 0.6 percent, or 34.45 points, to 5,684.25, but added 0.14 percent for the week.

Earnings have been a key driver of share performance.

Reliance Industries fell 1.05 percent, bringing its losses to 2 percent for the week, on worries about whether the energy conglomerate can sustain the rebound seen in its refining margins for the July-September quarter out on Monday.

Battery maker Exide industries shares slumped 8.9 percent after profit and margins missed market estimates as higher costs dented operating performance.

Adani Power Ltd dropped 2.4 percent after swinging to a July-September net loss of 2.6 billion rupees from a 1.7 billion profit a year ago.

Bank shares fall on profit-taking: ICICI Bank lost 0.7 percent after gaining 18 percent since the end of August to Thursday's close, outperforming the Nifty which gained 8.75 percent during the same period.

HDCF Bank lost 1.2 percent, while mortgage lender HDFC declined 1.1 percent.

Shares in Kingfisher Airlines dropped 4.6 percent.

However, among gainers, shares in ITC rose 2 percent, after earlier hitting a record 299 rupees. The tobacco firm's higher cigarette prices protected margins from stagnant volume growth.

Shares in jewellery companies, gained on hopes of a spike in jewellery sales ahead of the festive season in India, when consumer spending appetite traditionally increases.

Shree Ganesh Jewellery gained 8.9 percent while Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri Ltd gained 10.9 percent.

CDC: Detergent Pods a Major Health Hazard for Kids

There's a new warning for parents who use laundry pods about how kids are mistaking them for bright, colorful candy and eating them.

There were 1,008 cases of detergent poisoning among kids during a 30-day period this summer, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released Thursday. Of those reported cases, 486 were linked to pods. Poison centers across the country were seeing an average of 10 cases a day, the CDC reported in May.

Ninety-four percent of poisonings from the laundry detergent pods are among kids younger than 6, according to the CDC report.

The CDC says that exposure to the detergent pods is "an emerging public health hazard in the United States."

Parents are learning just how dangerous the bite-sized, single-dose of laundry detergent pods really can be. The concentrated packet of detergent sent 1-year-old Isabella Sutton to the hospital after she ate one.

"I just figured they got into candy, and they were eating candy," Jessica Sutton, Isabella's mom, told ABC News earlier this year.

Minutes later, Isabella had severe vomiting and diarrhea before being rushed to the emergency room. Similar reactions have been reported across the country with many children also experiencing drowsiness, nausea and potentially life-threatening symptoms such as difficulty breathing.

"You don't think about safety-proofing laundry detergent," Sutton said.

The makers of Tide detergent - Proctor & Gamble - told ABC News in May they planned to unveil new childproof packaging by the summer. The new packaging features a double-latch lid and a larger warning label on the container that some critics say looks like a candy jar.

Proctor & Gamble has distributed the new containers but never recalled the old ones. ABC News visited four stores this week and found the old easy-to-open plastic containers on shelves.

Proctor & Gamble told ABC News that it is adding an over-the-lid resealable sticker that will "gradually be available as of December in stores."

Consumers who would like to use the resealable sticker earlier can do so by calling 1-877-751-7227, beginning Nov. 1.

Henkel -- the maker of Purex Ultra Packs -- told ABC News that, since May, is has "updated the packaging with clearer labels to warn parents about the risks and to provide more specific instructions in the event of ingestion."

Other detergent manufacturers who previously told ABC News in May that they were reviewing the safety packaging did not respond to requests for an update.

Until changes are made, poison control experts say, the onus falls on the parents to keep the detergent packets locked up and out of the reach of children.

New research presented this week at the Neuroscience 2012 conference suggests that what you eat can even alter your brain ? and vice versa.

Timothy Verstynen?and his colleagues used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe the brain activity in 29 adults. The study participants were shown words on a screen in various colors and asked to identify the color, not the word. Sometimes it was easy ? the word red printed in red; other times it was harder, like seeing the word red printed in blue.

The overweight and obese participants? brains showed more activity during difficult questions, suggesting they were working harder to get the same answers.
Verstynen said the results imply that obese people are less efficient at making complex decisions, which could be important for controlling impulse behavior.

His team theorizes that unhealthy eating choices can lead to disrupted brain connections that lead to weakened brain performance, which can lead to making more unhealthy choices.

In other words, it's a vicious cycle.

A second study, presented by Dr. Tony Goldstone, showed the brain?s orbitfrontal cortex may play a big role in how people make food choices. This area encodes the ?value? of a food, Goldstone said ? i.e. how rewarding or pleasurable it will be to eat.

Study participants were asked to fast overnight. In the morning they were given a breakfast of about 700 calories and shown photos of food while hooked up to an MRI machine. They were asked to fast again before another visit; the following morning they were not given breakfast and then shown the same photos.

The starving participants? orbitfrontal cortex?s were activated when they were shown photos of high-calorie food. Their reaction was less strong after they had eaten breakfast.

The research suggests fasting or dieting increases the brain?s desire for high-calorie food.

?That?s one of the reasons it?s so difficult to keep weight off,? Goldstone said.

The good news is that research is ongoing to find ways to block our brains? love of unhealthy food. Two studies presented at the conference analyzed the effect of medications designed to treat alcohol/drug addiction on rats? eating behaviors.

In one, researchers injected the addiction drug naltrexone into the prefrontal cortex ? the decision-making area of the brain ? to decrease junk food consumption in binge-eating rodents. The drug worked in the study, but more research is needed to see if and how this could apply to humans.
