VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Breaking with tradition, Pope Francis delivered off-the-cuff remarks about God's power to forgive instead of reading from a written speech for the first Sunday window appearance of his papacy.

He also spoke only in Italian ? beginning with "buon giorno" (Good day) and ending with "buon pranzo" (Have a good lunch) ? instead of greeting the faithful in several languages as his last few predecessors had done.

His comments and humor delighted a crowd of more than 150,000 in St. Peter's Square, drawing cheers and laughter.

But Francis did tweet in English and other languages, saying: "Dear friends, I thank you from my heart and I ask you to continue to pray for me. "

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said it was likely Francis, at least for the moment, given the off-the-cuff style, was sticking with Italian, a language he's comfortable with. Lombardi left open the possibility that other languages would be used in the appearances with the public in the future.

In just five days, Francis' straightforward, spontaneous style has become immediate hallmark of his papacy.

Earlier Sunday, he made an impromptu appearance before the public from a side gate of the Vatican, startling passers-by and prompting cheers, before delivering a six minute homily ? brief by church standards ? at the Vatican's tiny parish church.

Before he entered St. Anna's church to celebrate Mass, he heartily shook hands with parishioners and kissed babies.

After Mass, Francis put his security detail to the test as he waded into the street just outside St. Anna's Gate. As the traffic light at the intersection turned green, Francis stepped up to the crowd, grasping outstretched hands. The atmosphere was so casual that several people even gripped Francis on the shoulder.

A few minutes later as the traffic light turned red, Francis ducked back inside the Vatican's boundaries to dash upstairs for the window appearance from the papal apartment in the Apostolic Palace.

The studio window was opened for the first time since Francis' predecessor, Benedict XVI, gave his last window blessing on Sunday, Feb. 24. Four days later, Benedict went into retirement, the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years.

The crowd was cheering wildly when the white curtain at the window of his apartment was parted, and Francis appeared, but fell into rapt silence when he began to speak. Some people's eyes welled up. Many people waving the blue-and-white flags of Argentine, the homeland of the world's first Latin American pope. Some people help their children aloft or on their shoulders to get a better look.

Said Ivana Cabello, 23, from Argentina: "We are so proud. He is Argentine, but also belongs to the rest of the world."

Angela Carreon, a 41-year-old Rome resident originally from the Philippines, estimated the crowd was twice as big as for Benedict's last appearance on Feb. 28.

"I think he looks like John Paul II. I hope he is like him," she said. "He has a heart."

Francis, the first pope from Latin America, was elected on March 13. He has been staying in a hotel on the Vatican's premises until the papal apartment in the palace is ready.

Hundreds of extra traffic police were deployed Sunday morning to control crowds and vehicles, for it was also the day of Rome's annual marathon.

Bus routes were rerouted and many streets were closed off in an attempt to channel the curious and faithful up the main boulevard from the Tiber river to St. Peter's square.

Giant video screens were set up so the huge crowd could get a close-up look at Francis, and dozens of medical teams were on hand for any emergencies.

After the Mass, the pope stepped out jauntily from St. Anna's Church and waved to a crowd of hundreds kept behind barriers across the street, and then greeted the Vatican parishioners one by one. One young man patted the pope on the back ? an indication of the informality that has been evident from the first moment of his papacy.

"Francesco! Francesco!" children shouted his name in Italian from the street. As he patted one little boy on the head, he asked "Are you a good boy?" and the child nodded.

"Are you sure?" the pope quipped.

In his homily, Francis said the core message of God is "that of mercy." He said God has an unfathomable capacity to pardon and noted that people are often harder on each other than God is toward sinners.

Edgardo Chapur, 42, an Argentine in Rome for first time, said it was very "emotional" to come to St. Peter's Square to listen to Francis.

"It's fantastic for us. I think it can change a lot of things in Argentina. It gives us hope," he said. "It has given us new strength."

Samsung Galaxy S4 reportedly set for early May launch in India

There's a lot of folks all around the world that are excited for the Samsung Galaxy S4. Following on from the massively successful Galaxy S3, there's no doubts that this is going to be one of the biggest sellers in mobile this year. Since the official unveiling in New York City, we're gradually beginning to build up a picture of availability, and next up is news for our friends over in India. 

According to AndroidOS.in, Samsung is set to launch the Galaxy S4 in India in the first week of May. They go on to say that a press event is likely in late April to officially launch the device in the country. Considering global availability is slated to begin from the end of April, this is great news for Indians eager to get their hands on one of the hottest devices of the year. 

India's Galaxy S4 will also be carrying the new Exynos 5 Octa inside, and not the Snapdragon 600 of the U.S. version. There are no details of pricing or any word on carrier partners for the Galaxy S4, but considering we're still 6 weeks or so out from launch, there's still plenty of time yet.

Obama needs to charm skeptical Israelis in visit

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Barack Obama's vow to take his message straight to the public during his first presidential visit to Israel will be a tough sell with many Israelis who consider him naive, too soft on the nation's enemies and cool to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Overcoming this perception will require a major charm offensive and an uncompromising U.S. pledge to stand behind Israel, especially when it comes to stopping Iran's suspect nuclear program. Without a major initiative in his pocket for making peace between Israel and the Palestinians, the U.S. president will use his three-day visit, which begins on Wednesday, primarily as a means to convey a close alliance with Israel.

Rather than address Israeli leaders in parliament, as his predecessor George W. Bush did, Obama will deliver his main speech at a Jerusalem auditorium packed with university students. Tickets for Obama's speech on Thursday at a 1,000-seat convention center are much in demand, and students are entering ticket raffles across the country.

"He could have spoken to politicians or tycoons, but instead he chose to speak to us," said Lotem Cazes, a 25-year-old political science student at Ben-Gurion University in the southern city of Beersheba. "It's very moving. Even though he knows that not everyone likes him here he is still coming and trying to help."

In another effort to woo the Israeli public, Obama granted an exclusive interview with Channel 2 TV at the White House.

"What this trip allows me to do is once again to connect to the Israeli people and there is no substitute to that. The bonds between our two countries are so strong, not just shared values but shared families, shared businesses," he said in the interview, which aired Thursday. "And for me to be able to directly speak to the Israeli people and talk about our unshakable commitment to Israel, but also to talk about hopefully a shared vision of a more peaceful and prosperous future during a time when we know there is a lot of tumult in the area, it is a great opportunity for me. I'm really looking forward to it."

Throughout the interview, he referred to Netanyahu by his nickname "Bibi."

The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv launched a Facebook competition for 20 tickets to hear the president and thousands applied. The embassy also has unveiled a life-sized cutout of the president so people can pose for photos with his likeness.

American flags are lining Israeli highways and an enthusiastic embrace of Obama would start a new chapter in his relations with Israel.

Disappointment has marked Obama's previous visits to the region. On those trips, he passed over Israel and stopped in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, where he delivered a landmark speech aimed at improving ties with the Muslim world. The speech, in which he criticized Israeli West Bank settlements, was seen in Israel as overly appeasing to the Arabs at their expense.

"I don't feel like he's done anything special for Israel," said Oshri Biton, a 40-year-old Jerusalem merchant. "As president, he has to be a friend of Israel's. But he's a friend who pats you on the shoulder. He doesn't give you a hug."

Israelis also will be looking for reassurance from Obama over his stance on Iran's suspect nuclear program.

Israel views a nuclear armed Iran as a threat to its existence, and Netanyahu has hinted at launching a pre-emptive military strike on the Islamic Republic. Obama has said that while he prefers using diplomacy over force, all options remain on the table. Tehran denies it is seeking atomic weapons, insisting its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

Relations during Obama's first term in office were mostly characterized by high-profile spats with Netanyahu, over peacemaking efforts with the Palestinians, Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and Iran. In public appearances together, the two have shown little personal chemistry and looked uncomfortable with one another.

Eytan Gilboa, an expert on Israel-U.S. relations at Bar-Ilan University near Tel Aviv, said most Israelis made a distinction between the United States, Obama the person and Obama the president.

A survey Gilboa conducted last year found that more than 90 percent of Israelis polled had a favorable opinion of America and Americans. More than two-thirds liked Obama personally, but fewer than 50 percent approved of his Mideast policies and his treatment of Netanyahu. When asked about specific policies, only one-third approved of Obama's approach to Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking and even fewer approved of his policies toward Iran, Gilboa added.

The survey of 500 Israelis had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

"The most powerful explanation is that Israelis think he cares less about Israel and more about other countries," Gilboa said.

Under the Obama administration, Israel has enjoyed its greatest security cooperation ever. The president and his team have been lauded by Israeli defense officials, particularly for backing the "Iron Dome" anti-missile defense system that recently shot down hundreds of rockets during a round of fighting against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. But the goodwill hasn't filtered down to the public.

Obama's visit, at the start of his second term and just as a new Israeli government takes shape, looks to open a new page and send a message to Israel ? as well as its adversaries ? that the U.S.-Israel bond is unshakable.

While policy issues are sure to dominate Obama's meetings with Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, he is not expected to exert major pressure and most of his visit is expected to be centered on ceremonial events and his efforts to seek public appeal.

Obama is scheduled to visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and lay a wreath on the grave of the slain Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He is to tour the Israel Museum and an exposition of products from the country's booming high-tech sector.

Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser, said Thursday that the president would reinforce U.S. support for the Palestinian Authority and would meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during a trip to the West Bank city of Ramallah.

The Palestinians aren't too giddy about the president either. Early in his administration, Obama T-shirts were a big seller on Palestinian streets after he pushed Netanyahu to curb the construction of settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, where the Palestinians hope to build their state. That, however, gave way to disappointment, especially after the White House refused to support the Palestinian's bid for independence at the United Nations. In recent days, posters of Obama have been vandalized in the Palestinian territories.

Obama sought to restart peace talks in 2010, but the effort collapsed within weeks. The Palestinians refuse to resume negotiations unless Israel stops building settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Netanyahu says talks should resume without preconditions, and says the Palestinians didn't return to the table even when he imposed a 10-month construction slowdown. He has allowed stepped-up construction in the territories since the United Nations moved to recognize a de facto state of Palestine in November.

Amnon Cavari, an expert in American presidential politics at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, a college near Tel Aviv, said he didn't think Obama would try to use the Israeli outreach effort as a way to pressure the government into concessions.

If anything, he said it had more to do with domestic American issues. Obama's shunning of Israel in the first term did not sit well with Jewish-American voters and a show of friendship could go a long way for Democrats in 2014 midterm elections.

"In the next four years there are going to be major changes in the Middle East, one way or the other," he said, referring primarily to issues over Iran. "Coming to Israel conveys the following message: The situation is not simple. The United States is behind you.'"

US Federal judge finds National Security Letters' gag provision unconstitutional

Woo, boy. You know those National Security Letters that the FBI has been issuing at its own discretion -- the ones Google has been doing its best to track? Judge Susan Illston of Federal District Court in San Francisco just found 'em unconstitutional. As the story goes, NSLs arrive from the factory with a gag order on the recipient, and as Illston sees it, forbidding the recipient from "disclosing that they had received such an order." So, she's suggesting that the whole thing should be banned under the First Amendment.

Moreover, she's ordering the US government to stop enforcing the gag provision in any lingering cases, though she reportedly "stayed her order for 90 days to give the government a chance to appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals." Needless to say, the move comes as a blow to the existing administration's surveillance practices, but something tells us this isn't the last word we'll be hearing on the matter. Urban Santa Fe desert Wedding: Sabrina + John

Apparently Sabrina + John loved being engaged so much that an entire a year passed before they even lifted a?finger to start planning. They just didn?t know what they wanted. Neither of them had even visited Santa Fe, New Mexico, but they knew they wanted a destination wedding and the lure of something entirely unexpected was enough for them.?Wedding Coordinator & Designer, Jessie Baca coined their wedding style as modern meets mountain desert and that?s exactly what it was, modern yet still lighthearted and playful.

Sabrina had told her florist that she wanted a bridal bouquet was ?asymmetrical and unrestrained? and the result was spot on. Sabrina fell in love with her bouquet?made of an air plant, succulents, scabiosa pods, purple dahlias, burgundy scabiosa and jasmine vine.

The best memory from the day was walking with John through the desert brush for our first look photos. One minute I was a ball of nerves, and then the next minute, I was carelessly dragging my dress through the dusty terrain, over rocks, sticks, and ant holes without a thought of getting it caught or dirty before the ceremony (which it did!). I realized we would walk through life in just the same way ? seeking beautiful places, helping one another, and laughing the entire way.

Jessie Baca built a ?living wall??adorned with air plants, succulents, choya wood, and moss to serve as the focal point for their ceremony.

Yves Lucero was the guitarist for their ceremony, and he played acoustic versions of Ceremony by New Order and Heartbeats by Jose Gonzalez as they walked down the aisle. Their first dance song was That?s How Strong My Love Is by Otis Redding.

As someone who works for a stationery & letterpress studio, I naturally enjoyed designing and creating all?of the paper touches for the wedding. The invitations reflected the serene mountain scenery but in a more?modern light with the use of straight lines and fluorescent coral ink. We also incorporated a pair of chiles?which added a humorous nod to our affinity for spicy food. Unexpectedly, we still hear about the personalized pins we made as part of our escort cards. John and I came up with a witty question?comical icebreakers based on our friendship with them?for each of our guests to proudly wear or hide depending on how?embarrassed?they were!

When Jessie, our Event Planner brought us to the Center for Contemporary Arts, it was the perfect match for us. The gallery is a renovated warehouse from the early 1900s, and we were immediately drawn not only to its history but also its unexpectedly airy and industrial interior. When we realized that our reception would be placed right in the middle of an art installation (that was yet to be determined), we were sold.

Love that the walls were lit up with video projections?of old black & white films (think Esther Williams and Busby Berkeley) that dazzled and created a magical?glow for their reception area.

So much fun. Congrats you two!

The GOLD PRICE today hit $1,598.54, pounding on that $1,600 door with both fists, but closed up only $1.90 at $1,592.50.

The SILVER PRICE gained a measly 4.5 cents to close at 2881.7c.

Today left the GOLD PRICE still above and outside that pennant it broke out of (upward) earlier this week. Indicators all argue that gold made a bottom at 1554.30 in February, then a higher low six days ago at $1,560.40. Any price lower than $1,570 (the apex of that pennant) would gainsay that conclusion that gold has reversed heaven-ward.

Silver slightly pierced the bottom boundary of its pennant, then traded back up into it today, nearly closing above its 20 DMA at 2891c. Here, too, all the indicators and sentiment all point to a reversal.

I expect to see silver and gold break out above 2950c and $1,600 next week. Now, saying that I'm crawling out on a limb with a chainsaw in one hand, but I'm willing to take that chance. It's still unclear, but when stocks break (before end-March) that should help gold and silver.

I'll admit I've had a dark cloud hanging over me lately. Just seems that the Rot is progressing faster than I can acclimate to it. Somehow the yankee government refusing to say it won't use drones in the US seems to me the same as saying it WILL use them. Call me old-fashioned, but a government claiming it has power and authority to kill its own citizens seems to contradict all the purposes of government. I won't even mention the signs the yankee government is planning once again to wage war on its own people -- Homeland Security ordering a billion rounds of hollow point ammo (banned in international warfare) and more armored vehicles that the Germans had when they invaded France in 1940. They need those like a fish needs a bicycle -- unless they're up to no good.

Yep, I know some of y'all with call me paranoid, goofy, squirrelly, all of that, but you have never had a SWAT team on your back porch. A day is coming when y'all are going to have to overcome your fear of government and stand up for your neighbors. Otherwise, when they come for you, there'll be nobody to stand up for you.

Criminal to resist? That's what they want you to think, and that it's criminal to insist on your rights. I reckon morality depends on your viewpoint, and what they call good behavior might also be called cowardice and treason to your fathers and your children. Got to choose.

But shoot! What do I know, a natural born fool from Tennessee? We're so backward some of us here still believe in the God of the Bible.

I saw a census report that one in three counties is now dying off due to weakened local economies. Young people move away and only the old are left, and these are mostly rural counties. Okay, I'm gonna cheer up now and get mean, plumb mean, so mean I can chew nails and spit out iron filings.

Stocks ground relentlessly to new tops this week, setting up for a big drop. Probably this top coming soon won't be the ultimate top, but the drop will have all those presently smugly cocksure that they are investing geniuses puking in their wastebaskets. Ultimate top should come later this year.

Dow fell 25.03 (0.17%) today to 14,514.11 while the S&P500, still unable to reach that 2007 top by two tiny points, fell 2.53 (0.16%) to 1,560.70.

Dow in Gold and Dow in Silver are still moving sideways, although the Dow in Silver inched a little higher to 504.74 oz. Both charts look very, very toppy.

Currencies moved around, but without any great changes. US dollar index fell 33.9 basis points (-0.44%) to 82.236. Yen poked its head up 0.79% to 104.89 cents per 100 yen. Euro did gap up a little to touch its 20 day moving average, gaining 0.54% to $1.3074. 20 DMA stands at $1.3102. I don't believe this amounts to more than a bounce in a downtrend. Today argues that the US Dollar has broken its uptrend, but it has yet to confirm that with lower prices.

A National Treasure is a person who by his contribution to culture or science has earned the thanks of the entire nation. Integrative physician Dr. Jonathan Wright of Tahoma Clinic in Seattle is just such a national treasure, which of course means that the Washington State medical board (Medical Quality Assurance Commission) has tried has tried to put him out of practice over 25 times since 1970. Vendetta? Naww, just an accident of socialist bureaucracy.

Smallest vibration sensor in the quantum world

Mar. 15, 2013 ? Carbon nanotubes and magnetic molecules are considered building blocks of future nanoelectronic systems. Their electric and mechanical properties play an important role. Researchers of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and French colleagues from Grenoble and Strasbourg have now found a way to combine both components on the atomic level and to build a quantum mechanical system with novel properties.

The study has been published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

In their experiment the researchers used a carbon nanotube that was mounted between two metal electrodes, spanned a distance of about 1 ?m, and could vibrate mechanically. Then, they applied an organic molecule with a magnetic spin due to an incorporated metal atom. This spin was oriented in an external magnetic field.

?In this setup, we demonstrated that the vibrations of the tube are influenced directly when the spin flips parallel or antiparallel to the magnetic field,? explains Mario Ruben, head of the working group at KIT. When the spin changes, the resulting recoil is transferred to the carbon nanotube and the latter starts to vibrate. Vibration changes the atomic distances of the tube and, hence, its conductance that is used as a measure of motion.

The strong interaction between a magnetic spin and mechanical vibration opens up interesting applications apart from determining the states of motion of the carbon nanotube. It is proposed to determine the masses of individual molecules and to measure magnetic forces within the nano-regime. Use as a quantum bit in a quantum computer might also be feasible.?

According to the supplementary information published in the same issue of nature nanotechnology such interactions are of high importance in the quantum world, i.e. in the range of discrete energies and tunnel effects, for the future use of nanoscopic effects in macroscopic applications. Combination of spin, vibration, and rotation on the nanoscale in particular may result in entirely new applications and technologies.
