Report: Hamas, Israel exchange messages via Cairo

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israel and Hamas have exchanged messages through Egypt after a rise in tensions along the Gaza border, the Al-Quds newspaper reported Saturday.

Israel bombed the Gaza Strip early Wednesday after militants fired rockets toward southern Israel following the death of a Palestinian with cancer in Israeli custody.

Israel's airstrikes were the first since it agreed to an Egypt-mediated ceasefire with Hamas in November.

Through Cairo, Israel relayed that it holds Hamas responsible for all attacks from the Gaza Strip, Al-Quds reported.

Israel also informed Hamas that it would respond to every ceasefire violation with military action and by restricting crossings and the permitted fishing zone, the report said.

Israel said Hamas should inform Egyptian mediators if it is unable to control the Gaza Strip in order to reconsider the ceasefire.

Hamas responded to Israel's messages, also via Cairo, and said it had tightened control of its border areas and informed all factions to abide by the ceasefire.

Hamas said it had arrested Salafi militants responsible for firing rockets at Israel, Al-Quds reported.

According to the report, Hamas informed Cairo that it cannot exercise complete control of Gaza, especially after the death of Maysara Abu Hamdiyeh in Israeli custody.

However, the Islamist movement said it was working hard to control the situation and asked Egyptian authorities to request Israel refrains from further attacks on the Gaza Strip.

On Thursday, the interior ministry in Gaza denied claims by a Salafist group that its members were arrested by Hamas forces for firing rockets at Israel.

Interior ministry spokesman Islam Shahwan denied there had been any "arrests for resistance to the enemy (Israel)," saying such action would "not help national consensus (unity)."

"Our security apparatus is part of the resistance and does not arrest anyone who resists the occupation. On the contrary, we encourage resistance," Shahwan said.

A Salafist source told AFP that Hamas's "internal security apparatus in the last two days arrested two mujahedeen. One was released after several hours. The other is still detained."

The source said it was part of a "campaign to pursue Salafists after the targeting of Israel with rockets."

The Mujahedeen Shura Council said it fired rockets at Israel on Tuesday in response to Abu Hamdiyeh's death.

In a statement Thursday, the group urged "the rational-minded in Hamas to pressure its security to release Salafists."

Google Inc is gearing up to launch a new version of its Nexus 7 tablet and the global company is aiming to ship as many as eight million of them in the second half of the year, according to Reuters.

The new version of the tablet is scheduled to arrive in the market by July.

The new Android tablet will be not just thinner than the previous one but will have higher-resolution display and will be powered by Qualcomm processor.

The new version of the tablet will also be manufactured by the Asus.

Reuters reported citing two reliable sources that the global company has yet to fix the price for the new version of the tablet.

Google is yet to make a public press release regarding the launch of the new version of its Nexus 7 tablet. However, sources told the news agency that the company might sell the new gadget for the same prize of its first generation that was launched last June: $199. With the arrival of the new model, the old model might be sold at a discounted price.

Aberrantly targeting to replicate its Smartphone success which was overtaken by iPad and Kindle, Google Inc introduced its first tablet last June.

The ruling company Apple is also speculated to launch new iPads this year.

Speaking to the Reuters, Fubon Security Analyst Arthur Liao said Google needs to focus on mobile devices sell as the Internet search giant gets 97% of its revenue from advertisement.

"This is the 'zero margin strategy'," said Arthur Liao. "Ninety-seven percent of Google's revenue comes from advertisement, so it needs to sell more mobile devices in order to reach more consumers."?

Boeing to conduct Dreamliner flight to test battery?

Boeing said Friday it had conducted a test flight of the Dreamliner 787 to evaluate a new battery system, which is aimed at overcoming the problems that led to the fleet's grounding in January.

In a statement released Friday afternoon, Boeing said the nearly two-hour flight was uneventful and was completed at 12:28 p.m. Pacific time. The airplane took off and landed at Paine Field, near the company's manufacturing operation in Everett, Wash.

Eleven people were on board the plane, including two representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration.

The test flight was meant to gather information the airplane makerhopes will convince the Federal Aviation Administration that the new batteries will not overheat or catch fire. Boeing said the next step was to gather and analyze data, which it would then deliver to the FAA in coming days.

Earlier, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said he thought Boeing has a "good plan" to fix the battery problem, but added that he wants to ensure the Dreamliner is safe before allowing the planes back in the air, and no decision had been made on commercial flights.

"They're doing the tests now, and we've agreed with the tests that they're doing. And when they complete the tests, they'll give us the information and we'll make a decision," LaHood said at the U.S. Export-Import Bank's annual conference in Washington.

The certification flight is part of a series of tests to show whether measures Boeing has devised to fix the battery problems work as intended. A preparation flight on March 25 "went according to plan," Boeing said.

It's still unknown what caused the batteries to overheat, and the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating. But Boeing came up with measures it says make the battery safe. It put more insulation in the battery, encased the battery in a steel box, changed the circuitry of the battery charger and added a titanium venting tube to expel heat and fumes outside the plane.

Once Boeing completes its testing, the FAA and other global regulators will review the test data and decide whether to certify the fix and return the plane to service.

Airlines have been barred from using the plane since it was grounded in January, and Boeing has been barred from delivering 787s, though it continues to build the plane. The delay has been costing the company an estimated $50 million a week.
