Study shows how brain cells shape temperature preferences

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

While the wooly musk ox may like it cold, fruit flies definitely do not. They like it hot, or at least warm. In fact, their preferred optimum temperature is very similar to that of humans?76 degrees F.

Scientists have known that a type of brain cell circuit helps regulate a variety of innate and learned behavior in animals, including their temperature preferences. What has been a mystery is whether or not this behavior stems from a specific set of neurons (brain cells) or overlapping sets.

Now, a new study from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) shows that a complex set of overlapping neuronal circuits works in concert to drive temperature preferences in the fruit fly Drosophila by affecting a single target, a heavy bundle of neurons within the fly brain known as the mushroom body. These nerve bundles, which get their name from their bulbous shape, play critical roles in learning and memory.

The study, published in the January 30, 2013 edition of the Journal of Neuroscience, shows that dopaminergic circuits?brain cells that synthesize dopamine, a common neurotransmitter?within the mushroom body do not encode a single signal, but rather perform a more complex computation of environmental conditions.

"We found that dopamine neurons process multiple inputs to generate multiple outputs?the same set of nerves process sensory information and reward-avoidance learning," said TSRI Assistant Professor Seth Tomchik. "This discovery helps lay the groundwork to better understand how information is processed in the brain. A similar set of neurons is involved in behavior preferences in humans?from basic rewards to more complex learning and memory."

Using imaging techniques that allow scientists to visualize neuron activity in real time, the study illuminated the response of dopaminergic neurons to changes in temperature. The behavioral roles were then examined by silencing various subsets of these neurons. Flies were tested using a temperature gradient plate; the flies moved from one place to another to express their temperature preferences.

As it turns out, genetic silencing of dopaminergic neurons innervating the mushroom body substantially reduces cold avoidance behavior. "If you give the fly a choice, it will pick San Diego weather every time," Tomchik said, "but if you shut down those nerves, they suddenly don't mind being in Minnesota."

The study also showed dopaminergic neurons respond to cooling with sudden a burst of activity at the onset of a drop in temperature, before settling down to a lower steady-state level. This initial burst of dopamine could function to increase neuronal plasticity?the ability to adapt?during periods of environmental change when the organism needs to acquire new associative memories or update previous associations with temperature changes.

Guantanamo Defense Clinic students observe military commission hearings

Duke Law School?s Guantanamo Defense Clinic has been granted observer status by the Office of Military Commissions in the U.S. Department of Defense.? As a result, some clinic students are getting the chance to see military commissions in action.?

Jesse Kobernick ?14 and Julie Coleman ?14 were the first to do so, spending their October study break observing hearings at Guantanamo Naval Base.? In the spring semester, one student traveled to Guantanamo in January, two are scheduled to go in February, and other trips will be scheduled as hearings are docketed.

?It was very useful to take the research we do in the clinic ? delving into legislative history and digging into cases that date back decades ? and see how it might actually impact the pre-trial hearings.? It brought a lot of our work home to me,? said Kobernick, who observed hearings related to presumptive classification of information relating to statements of the five alleged 9/11 co-conspirators, including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who are being jointly tried.? The relative informality of the proceeding surprised him, he added.? ?I thought processes would be highly structured, but instead there seemed to be an ongoing discussion between the attorneys and the judge as they figured out how they were going to proceed.? The judge wanted to give everyone a chance to speak on the motions, [so] it was slow and painstaking.??

Coleman observed a hearing on a motion brought on behalf of the accused U.S.S. Cole bomber, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, whose defense team received assistance, in past academic years, from clinic students.? She described the atmosphere at the section known as ?Camp Justice? as surreal.

?To get into the courtroom there were three security checks and you could bring in paper, but not pens.? They provided pens once you were in,? said Coleman who said the opportunity to work in the Guantanamo clinic clinched her decision to attend law school at Duke.? ?The viewing gallery was behind a triple pane of glass.? We could see everything happening live, but the audio was on a delay.? If anything classified or close to classified came up, it was muted.? And all photos, even of the courthouse exterior, were banned.??

?Being on the ground is always different from working on memos or motions here,? said Lecturing Fellow Gabriela McQuade ?10, who co-teaches the clinic along with Professor Madeline Morris.? ?It's strategically beneficial for students to see how the hearings are working, what kinds of things the judges are doing and responding to.?

Kobernick added that he found it enlightening to interact with other observers, such as officials from NGOs and journalists from across the political spectrum.? ?They have been steeped in the commissions and have a lot of knowledge about the process.? It was useful to watch the hearings with them and talk to them about their observations.???

The clinic gained observer status after demonstrating its ?actual, traceable, substantive contributions? to the military commission cases and process through a review of a dossier of faculty and student research and writing, said McQuade.?

?Gaining observer status represents recognition of the longstanding and extensive relationship the clinic has had with the military commission system and a nod to the fact that what we are contributing is valuable,? she said.? ?Our ability to reach the students and teach them about the law of war, military commissions, international law and U.S. criminal law is important, and our product that is used by the defense attorneys in the military commissions also has worth.? So we were excited to have observer status granted as an affirmation of that work.?

Google's newly detailed North Korea maps offer a peek into an isolated land

Google's newly detailed North Korea maps offer a peek into an isolated land

North Korea has yet to welcome the internet with open arms despite Eric Schmidt's visit, but the internet is certainly welcoming North Korea: as of a sweeping update, Google Maps touts detailed cartography of the secluded state rather than the voids we've known before. The results still leave significant blank spots, although that's forgivable when Google Map Maker is virtually the only option to improve accuracy. We doubt a suspicious government is about to let Street View cars run freely on Pyongyang's streets when visitors can't even get mobile internet access, after all. Google already plans to patch those holes in a timelier fashion by incorporating future Map Maker changes as soon as they're proven accurate. While many of those covered by the update might never see it for themselves, Google's work at least paints a more complete picture of the world for the rest of us.

Harry Belafonte: Blacks should take part in gun debate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Singer, actor and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte on Tuesday urged leaders in the black community to get more involved in the national debate on guns.

Belafonte told The Associated Press that the current discussion arising out of the Connecticut school massacre in December often ignores decades of urban gun violence. He said it's important that African-American leaders participate in the debate over gun control.

"What really concerns me is the ingredients of the discourse," he said. "The African-American community ... where is that community? Where is that voice? I think the black community, the black leadership need to stir it up."

The 85-year-old Belafonte made his comments during a visit to the Rhode Island School of Design, where he delivered an address on his life as an artist and activist. He urged the 550 people in attendance to embrace "radical thoughts" for solving poverty, inequality, violence and greed.

"What I find missing mostly in the American discourse is the rejection of radical thought," he said. "They (national leaders) speak within the same dull space they inherited from past oppressors."

Belafonte was called "The King of Calypso" for bringing Caribbean music to a global audience. He was also a key figure in the civil rights movement, giving financial support to Martin Luther King Jr. and funding organizations like the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. He was an organizer of the 1963 March on Washington.

More recently, Belafonte has worked on efforts to fight poverty and AIDS and was a vocal critic of former President George W. Bush. Tuesday, he again criticized the former president, saying Bush led a "regime that stole an election" and led the nation to war in Iraq without justification.

Two thousand flee as battle engulfs South Sudan town

JUBA (Reuters) - Two thousand people were forced to flee to a U.N. base after a battle between South Sudanese soldiers and the guards of a former rebel commander laid waste to a small town, the United Nations and witnesses said on Monday.

South Sudan won independence from Sudan in 2011 but the government has been struggling to assert control over an impoverished country the size of France that is full of weapons after decades of civil war with the north.

The latest fighting took place on Sunday in the small town of Pibor in the eastern state of Jonglei, between soldiers and bodyguards of former rebel commander James Kuberin, witnesses said.

Kuberin used to be a commander of a group led by David Yau Yau, one of several militias fighting the government of the new African republic, but he defected to the army in December.

Witnesses said Kuberin went to Pibor's market to get a haircut and was told by an army patrol not to walk around with armed guards.

Witness Peter Gazulu said one of the soldiers had a hand grenade. "Somebody tried to take it and they wrestled with it and it exploded. The guy died. Then the other men opened fire on the bodyguards and they escaped," he told Reuters by telephone.

"The army fired all over the place and burned half of Pibor town, particularly in the south. They were firing at civilians," he said. "In a house the father of my friend was burned alive. The body is still there." Several people had been injured, he said.

About two thousand people fled the town, mainly made up of thatched houses, to seek protection at a U.N. peacekeeping base, U.N. spokesman Kouider Zerrouk said.

Army spokesman Philip Aguer said one soldier had been killed in the battle, and that Kuberin had fled with his guards afterwards. He declined to say whether the army had fired on unarmed civilians.

Medical organization Medecins Sans Frontieres, one of few charities operating in Jonglei, said it had treated four people for gunshot wounds.

South Sudan's civil war with Sudan ended with a 2005 peace deal which paved the way for secession. Rebel and inter-ethnic violence is hindering government plans to explore a vast oil concession block with the help of French firm Total.

In Jonglei, there has been a cycle of revenge killings between the Murle and Lou Nuer tribes, often provoked by cattle raids. More than 1,500 people have been killed in the clashes since South Sudan's independence, according to the United Nations.

Human rights groups accuse the army of serious abuses against civilians, including simulated drownings and rape, during a disarmament process aimed at ending the inter-ethnic violence.

A radio station with links to Yau Yau's group said the rebels were fighting the government because of the alleged abuses during the disarmament program.

South Sudan accuses Sudan of supplying Yau Yau's rebels with weapons, an allegation denied by Khartoum.

Barge hits bridge, spills oil into Mississippi River

Eli Baylis / Vicksburg Post via AP

The towboat Nature Way Endeavor banks a barge against the western bank of the Mississippi River on Sunday as vehicles travel on the Interstate 20 bridge.

By Janet McConnaughey, The Associated Press

A barge carrying 80,000 gallons of oil hit a railroad bridge in Vicksburg, Miss., on Sunday, spilling light crude into the Mississippi River and closing the waterway for eight miles in each direction, the Coast Guard said. A second barge was damaged.

Investigators did not know how much had spilled, but an oily sheen was reported as far as three miles downriver of Vicksburg after the 1:12 a.m. (2:12 a.m. ET) incident, said Lt. Ryan Gomez of the Coast Guard's office in Memphis, Tenn.

Authorities were still trying to determine the source of the leak, but it appeared to be coming from one or two tanks located at the stern of the first barge, Gomez said. He said there was no indication that any oil was leaking from the second vessel, and said it was still unclear whether the second barge also hit the bridge or was damaged through a collision with the first.

"Investigators are still trying to figure out what happened," he said.

United States Environmental Services, a response-and-remediation company, was working to contain the oil with booms before collecting it and transferring it to one of the barge's undamaged tanks, then ultimately to a separate barge, Gomez said. He could not say how long the river would remain closed in the area. Five northbound and two southbound vessels were waiting to pass, he said.

"It's still considered an active leak," Gomez said. "We don't have an estimate or accurate amount of what was released."

Railroad traffic was allowed to continue after the bridge was found safe for trains, Petty Officer Carlos Vega said.

The last time an oil spill closed a portion of the lower Mississippi River, it was for less than a day last February after an oil barge and a construction barge collided, spilling less than 10,000 gallons of oil. In 2008, a fuel barge collided with a tanker and broke in half, dumping 283,000 gallons of heavy crude into the waterway, and closing the river for six days.

The oil sheen from Sunday's incident was unlikely to pose a threat to the Gulf of Mexico, located 344 river miles south of Vicksburg.

Residents and businesses in Gulf Coast states are still recovering from the April 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, which killed 11 workers and spewed more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf.

Climate change impacts to U.S. coasts threaten public health, safety and economy, report finds

Jan. 28, 2013 ? According to a new technical report, the effects of climate change will continue to threaten the health and vitality of U.S. coastal communities' social, economic and natural systems.

The report, Coastal Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerabilities: a technical input to the 2013 National Climate Assessment, authored by leading scientists and experts, emphasizes the need for increased coordination and planning to ensure U.S. coastal communities are resilient against the effects of climate change.

The recently released report examines and describes climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems and human economies and communities, as well as the kinds of scientific data, planning tools and resources that coastal communities and resource managers need to help them adapt to these changes.

"Sandy showed us that coastal states and communities need effective strategies, tools and resources to conserve, protect, and restore coastal habitats and economies at risk from current environmental stresses and a changing climate," said Margaret A. Davidson of NOAA's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management and co-lead author of the report. "Easing the existing pressures on coastal environments to improve their resiliency is an essential method of coping with the adverse effects of climate change."

A key finding in the report is that all U.S. coasts are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change such as sea-level rise, erosion, storms and flooding, especially in the more populated low-lying parts of the U.S. coast along the Gulf of Mexico, Mid-Atlantic, northern Alaska, Hawaii, and island territories. Another finding indicated the financial risks associated with both private and public hazard insurance are expected to increase dramatically.

"An increase in the intensity of extreme weather events such as storms like Sandy and Katrina, coupled with sea-level rise and the effects of increased human development along the coasts, could affect the sustainability of many existing coastal communities and natural resources," said Virginia Burkett of the U.S. Geological Survey and co-lead author of the report.

The authors also emphasized that storm surge flooding and sea-level rise pose significant threats to public and private infrastructure that provides energy, sewage treatment, clean water and transportation of people and goods. These factors increase threats to public health, safety, and employment in the coastal zone.

The report's authors noted that the population of the coastal watershed counties of the U.S. and territories, including the Great Lakes, makes up more than 50 percent of the nation's population and contributed more than $8.3 trillion to the 2011 U.S. economy but depend on healthy coastal landforms, water resources, estuaries and other natural resources to sustain them. Climate changes, combined with human development activities, reduce the ability of coasts to provide numerous benefits, including food, clean water, jobs, recreation and protection of communities against storms.

Seventy-nine federal, academic and other scientists, including the lead authors from the NOAA and USGS, authored the report which is being used as a technical input to the third National Climate Assessment -- an interagency report produced for Congress once every four years to summarize the science and impacts of climate change on the United States.

Other key findings of the report include:

  • Expected public health impacts include a decline in seafood quality, shifts in disease patterns and increases in rates of heat-related morbidity.
  • Changes in the location and the time of year when storms form can lead to large changes in where storms land and the impacts of storms. Any sea-level rise is virtually certain to exacerbate storm-surge and flooding related hazards.
  • Because of changes in the hydrological cycle due to warming, precipitation events (rain, snow) will likely be heavier. Combined with sea-level rise and storm surge, this will increase flooding severity in some coastal areas, particularly in the Northeast.
  • Temperature is primarily driving environmental change in the Alaskan coastal zone. Sea ice and permafrost make northern regions particularly susceptible to temperature change. For example, an increase of two degrees Celsius during the summer could basically transform much of Alaska from frozen to unfrozen, with extensive implications.
  • As the physical environment changes, the range of a particular ecosystem will expand, contract or migrate in response. The combined influence of many stresses can cause unexpected ecological changes if species, populations or ecosystems are pushed beyond a tipping point.
  • Although adaptation planning activities in the coastal zone are increasing, they generally occur in an ad-hoc manner and are slow to be implemented. Efficiency of adaptation can be improved through more accurate and timely scientific information, tools, and resources, and by integrating adaptation plans into overall land use planning as well as ocean and coastal management.
  • An integrated scientific program will reduce uncertainty about the best ways coastal communities can to respond to sea-level rise and other kinds of coastal change. This, in turn, will allow communities to better assess their vulnerability and to identify and implement appropriate adaptation and preparedness options.

This report is available online.

Djokovic wins third successive Australian Open

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic became the first man to win three successive Australian Open titles in the professional era when he beat third seed Andy Murray 6-7 7-6 6-3 6-2 in a battle of attrition on Sunday.

The Serb, who has now won four of his six grand slam titles in Melbourne, managed to win the important points as the Briton suffered from blisters on his right foot and problems at the top of his left hamstring.

Both players produced superb service games throughout the match with Djokovic the first to achieve a break in the eighth game of the third set, propelling him to the brink of the title after the pair had shared tiebreaks in the first two sets.

Djokovic then capitalized on a flagging Murray, who had battled to a five-set win over Roger Federer on Friday, breaking early in the fourth set and then holding on to clinch the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup for the fourth time.

"What a joy. It's an incredible feeling to win this trophy again," Djokovic said. "This is definitely my favorite grand slam. I love this tournament. I love this court.

"I have to congratulate Andy and thank him.

"We have played so many great matches in the last two years. Bad luck for tonight but I wish you best of luck for the season."

Djokovic was not the only man chasing a record.

U.S. Open champion Murray, who beat Djokovic in the New York final in September, was also hoping to become the first Briton to win the title since Fred Perry in 1934 and the first man to win his second grand slam immediately after winning his first.

Djokovic had the first opportunity to take an advantage when he held four break points in the sixth game, but Murray fought them all off and leveled at 3-3 with a kicking ace down the center line.

The world number one held another break point in the eighth game, but Murray again saved and forced a tiebreak, which he sealed 7-2 after he had jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked like giving it up.

MEDICAL TIMEOUT

Murray's first serve, which had caused him problems in the first set, was much better in the second and the Scot reduced the number of unforced errors though neither man looked likely to lose their serve.

The top seeded Djokovic seized the advantage in the tiebreak when Murray double faulted after he had been forced to stop his serve as a feather from birds in the roof fluttered down on court.

That point gave the Serb a 3-2 lead, which he capitalized on to win 7-3 when Murray hit a backhand into the net.

The Briton then took a medical timeout before the third set began to have sticking plaster and strapping tape applied to blisters around the big toe on his right foot and the momentum shifted to the Serbian world number one.

Djokovic, however, waited until the time was right to pounce on Murray's weakness, which he did in the eighth game when he claimed the first break of the match after almost three hours of play to take a 5-3 lead.

The Serb then blasted through his service game to love to take the third set in a relatively lightning 41 minutes after the first two sets had taken 68 and 65 minutes respectively.

Murray's foot continued to give him trouble in the fourth set as he was unable to stop abruptly, change direction, or push off properly to generate power.

Djokovic broke in the third game and sensing the finishing line was in sight, achieved a double break in the fifth and sealed the win when a Murray backhand return thudded into the net.

"I'd like to thank Novak," Murray said.

"His record here is incredible. There are very few people who have managed to do what he has done here.

"He's an amazing champion, so well done to him."

US to support French in Mali with aerial refueling

(AP) ? The United States has decided to provide additional support to the French military in its war against Islamic militants in Mali by conducting aerial refueling missions.

The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has told the French defense minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, that U.S. Africa Command will provide the aerial refueling support. A Pentagon spokesman says the two defense officials discussed the refueling missions and other topics during a phone conversation Saturday.

U.S. aerial refueling planes would be a boost to air support for French ground forces as they enter areas of Mali that are controlled by al-Qaida-linked extremists.

The U.S. has already been helping France by transporting French troops and equipment to the West African nation.

Gilmore Ayres, like Ryan, began his career in the customer service position and was promoted to an account manager position in 2012. Gil is a Lexington, VA native and enjoys spending time outdoors as well as selling outdoor furniture. ?I used 2012 as a year to gain the knowledge needed in order to fully educate my clients throughout the entire buying process. I am excited to use that knowledge as we head into 2013,? stated Gil. Your customer service is very consistent.? As the most experienced account manager, Tammy Bryant came to ParknPool from the health care profession. Her experience and heart for helping people are exhibited to all of her clients. ?I enjoy helping each and every phone call and online visitor that makes their way to my desk. It is rewarding to receive pictures of an area that I helped to furnish,? said Tammy when asked what she liked most about being a ParknPool account manager. ?Working with Tammy on all of our outdoor projects has been a joy! She?s very customer service oriented and goes above and beyond to make my job (and hers) as easy as possible,? stated Fox River Resort in response to a client survey.

As an Army veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, Chris Lopez, has been an account manager at ParknPool for the better part of a year. ?Chris answered all my questions and was very helpful in the entire process. I look forward to doing business with him and your company again,? complimented RPI Design Goods. Chris enjoys applying the variety of skills he learned while being in the armed forces to help his clients. ?After coming to ParknPool by way of the military, it is definitely a much more relaxed environment to work in. All of my clients are great to deal with,? explained Chris. As one of ParknPool?s leading account managers, Sarah Dudley is originally from Lexington, VA and though she moved away for a brief time, is now back in the area. When asked what she enjoys about her job, she excitedly remarked, ?It?s important, at the end of the day, that you take pride in what you do on a daily basis. It?s not every day that I get to truly make a difference but when the occasion arises, it makes it all worthwhile. After helping to save a Tennessee high school homecoming with bleachers, Sarah was complimented with this remark by the White House Heritage High School Booster Club, ?Sarah was responsive and cared about our school and community ? we couldn?t have achieved our goal without her!?

Educating and serving their clients, is very important to ParknPool and they are excited with the account managers that they have in place to further exceed expectations and enhance earnings. U.S. quits bilateral civil society group in rebuke to Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The United States has quit a U.S.-Russian forum intended to promote civil society to protest Moscow's clampdown on civil rights and public activism, the State Department said on Friday.

The Civil Society Working Group was set up during a thaw in ties after Barack Obama became president, and the U.S. pullout reflects how strains have grown since Vladimir Putin started campaigning in 2011 to return to the Kremlin.

In the past year, Russia has restricted demonstrations after a wave of opposition protests that Putin accused Washington of encouraging, and has jailed or begun prosecuting several political activists.

Putin, who started a six-year term as president in May, signed a law last month that outlaws U.S.-funded organizations deemed to be involved in political activity, and Russia has ejected the U.S. Agency for International Development, which supported groups campaigning to improve civil institutions.

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Melia said the restrictions on civil society "called into serious question whether maintaining that mechanism (the working group) was either useful or appropriate".

He said Washington's "commitment to engage Russian civil society in support of its objectives ... remains unwavering."

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland amplified Melia's remarks, saying Putin's crackdown frustrated the work of the group.

"We remain committed to a dialogue with the government of Russia on democracy issues and human rights issues, but this particular working group was not working," she told reporters.

"It was not advancing the cause of civil society in Russia, so we will do that in other ways," added Nuland.

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded mildly, saying, "Russia sincerely wants good relations with the United States and it causes regret when we lose any format for dialogue without replacing it with another."

Efforts to reinvigorate relations after Obama's re-election have been poisoned by the fallout from the death of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer who had accused police investigators of stealing huge sums from the state through fraudulent tax refunds, in pre-trial detention in 2009. The Kremlin's own human rights council said he was probably beaten to death.

Last year's U.S. Magnitsky Act bars Russians accused of involvement in Magnitsky's death or of other human rights violations from entering the United States, and freezes any assets they have there.

Russia responded with a law that imposes similar measures on Americans accused of violating the rights of Russians, outlaws U.S.-funded civil society groups deemed to be involved in politics, and prohibits adoptions by the thousands of Americans who came to Russia each year seeking to take in Russian orphans.

Russia has also accused Washington of meddling for criticizing the Kremlin's moves to quash political dissent.

The working group was one of about 20 in a U.S.-Russia commission announced in 2009 by Obama and Russia's then-president, Dmitry Medvedev, as ties were warming.

Melia said some issues that had been addressed by the group, such as those involving children, corruption, human trafficking and prisons, might be discussed through other channels.

How trained literacy coaches can improve student reading comprehension

Jan. 25, 2013 ? The language and reading comprehension skills of low-income upper elementary-school students -- especially English-language learners -- can improve markedly if trained literacy coaches engage teachers in conducting interactive text discussions with students, according to a three-year University of Pittsburgh study.

The Pitt researchers report in the journal Learning and Instruction that language and reading comprehension showed measurable improvement for young students when their teachers had worked "at-elbow" with content-specific literacy coaches to foster a more interactive learning environment during class reading assignments.

In the study -- one of the first of its kind -- the coaches were trained using a professional development system designed at Pitt's Institute for Learning called the Content-Focused Coaching Model? that has coaches provide teachers with the tools they need to implement rigorous, standards-based lessons. Teachers can then use the knowledge they've gained to train other teachers in their schools.

"Our goal was to create a method for closing the literacy gap between more privileged and low-income students," said study principal investigator Lindsay Clare Matsumura, a research scientists in Pitt's Learning Research and Development Center and an associate professor in Pitt's School of Education. "We found that a well-structured and content-specific approach to literacy coaching shows strong evidence of being able to really make an impact on classroom text discussion and reading achievement in these upper elementary grades -- a critical time for students to develop their higher-level reading skills."

This content-specific method, developed at Pitt's Institute for Learning within the University's Learning Research and Development Center, also lends itself to adherence of the Common Core State Standards, a national campaign aiming to increase the quality of the country's education system.

"Changing discussion patterns in classrooms is a big undertaking," said Donna DiPrima Bickel, a fellow in Pitt's Institute for Learning and codeveloper and leader of the Content-Focused Coaching Model?. "The Common Core State Standards require a broader and deeper level of comprehension from students at all grade levels beyond first grade. It's imperative that teachers learn ways of supporting students to interact effectively with a range of different types of texts. Teachers engaged with coaches trained in the Content-Focused Coaching Model? valued the support they received in helping them learn to facilitate text discussion on rigorous texts."

In a group-randomized trial, Matsumura -- along with Helen Garnier, a consultant with Pitt's Learning Research and Development Center, and Jessaca Spybrook of Western Michigan University -- investigated the effects of the Content-Focused Coaching Model?, zeroing in on the quality of text discussions in the classroom.

The researchers worked with 29 schools in a Texas school district that serves a high percentage of low-income and English-language-learning students. Half of the schools adopted the Content-Focused Coaching Model?, which entailed highly trained coaches entering schools and providing professional development training to upper elementary school teachers. The other half continued in their previously assigned literacy plan, which included the involvement of literacy coaches untrained in the coaching model.

"Many literacy coaches don't receive a lot of training on how to work effectively with teachers," said Matsumura. "So our goal was to work intensively with these coaches by teaching them how to model instructional strategies and work with teachers to better plan reading lessons. We provided them with effective strategies to share with teachers so they could boost their engagement with students."

During the study's first year, Pitt researchers collected baseline data on the quality of classroom discussions, teachers' participation in professional development, and students' reading achievement. Soon after, the coaches were placed in schools and began working with teachers on "Questioning the Author," one approach to the Content-Focused Coaching Model? in which students answer critical questions about the author and text. "Questioning the Author" was developed at Pitt's Learning Research and Development Center by Emeritus Professor Isabel Beck and Research Scientist Margaret McKeown.

Under this literacy approach, students are asked to stop throughout the reading of a book and answer thought-provoking questions. If a text is written unclearly, said Matsumura, the teacher will pause to make sure students understand what is happening and also review any unknown vocabulary. The approach is meant to result in more interactive discussions leading to better comprehension and retention, and it entails "quite a bit of planning" on the part of teachers for it to be effective, Matsumura said.

In the Pitt study, the coaches began by leading a classroom discussion while teachers observed. After several months of observation, the teachers adopted the technique into their classroom for the rest of the study. Students' reading scores were evaluated through a series of tests throughout the three years.

The team found that schools participating in the coaching intervention had a positive effect on students' reading achievement -- specifically for English-language learners, who made up 40 percent of the study's sample. English-language learners with trained teachers scored .48 of a standard deviation higher on the state reading rest than those in the comparison schools. A standard deviation is the average distance between any score in a distribution and the mean of the distribution.

"One of our suppositions is that in having these kinds of interactive discussions, you're really getting kids to talk and learn to use new vocabulary actively," said Matsumura. "Nevertheless, our study highlights the need for usage of literacy-coaching programs -- like the Content-Focused Coaching Model? -- to promote student reading achievement."

In addition to improving students' literacy at an individual level, the study had a larger, across-the-board success.

"Anyone can provide you with an anecdote about how one coach has helped one teacher but the real story here is in the systematic results," said Bickel. "Lindsay and her team retrieved data that clearly show that schools with coaches trained in the Content-Focused Coaching Model? improved literacy skills far beyond those where teachers worked with coaches who were not trained in this method. And, as a result of this study, we are able to better describe the components of an effective coaching program."

As is the case with most large-scale projects, widespread implementation of these interventions may prove to be a challenge. Therefore, Matsumura and her colleagues are now working towards delivering this coaching online.

Essentially Angela talks Modern Love: What's the formula for success?

I?ve been thinking quite a bit about relationships this week?

HANDSTOUCHINGS-33

What is it that keeps some going strong while others start promising, only to end tragically?

We all know the couple whose break up shocked us, and we also know the marriage that is still going strong despite everyone?s assumptions that it would end before the five-year Wood Anniversary.

So what gives? How is it that some people make it and others don?t??

It would be easy to give the standard answer and say it?s all about love. ?You either have it or your don?t.

But I disagree. ?LOVE has good intentions. I?ve seen people who love each other but can?t make it work.

Studying healthy relationships, toxic ones, and yes, even experimenting with the concept myself, I?ve realized there are five key elements that lasting partnerships must have.

?

1. Respect.?

If you don?t respect the person you lie down next at night, it won?t last. ?Respect. For their ideas, their dreams, their goals.?Respect for how they conduct themselves in life, and respect for the kind of person they are. ?The moment you feel disdain for your partner is the beginning of the end. ?It might take a long time to get there, but believe me, if you don?t have respect it?s a sure indicator you are on the road to break up.

2.?Healthy Disagreement.?

You will argue, that?s a given. ?You won?t agree sometimes on things- like politics, where to go to dinner, or how to discipline your children. ?But the way you handle yourself during these disagreements is telling to your relationship. ?Fighting fair is a must for strong relationships. ?So is talking it out. ?Remember what your grandparents told you about never going to bed angry? It?s true. ?Even if it means you hash it out all night, that?s what you do. ?Get to the bottom of things. ?If you don?t, resentment starts building its wall, layer upon layer until one day, one of you forgets to load the dishwasher and the other packs bags and is out the door for good.

3. Emotional & Physical Connection. ?

Sex has to be a priority. Cuddling has to be a priority. Romance can not die. The moment you let these fall to the back burner, is the moment you are short-changing your relationship. ?As much as we love our success, family, hobbies, ourselves?if you don?t constantly work on your relationship with your partner and put them as the most important thing in your life, YOU WILL FAIL.?

Success feels amazing but it doesn?t keep you warm at night, children grow up and find their own partners, hobbies and narcissistic pursuits are great at the time, but eventually it just gets empty. If we all worked as hard on our relationship as we did every other area in our lives, the divorce rate would be much lower?and we would all be much happier.

4. Support For Each Other.?

We all need someone to have our back. ?Someone to support us no matter if we have victories on a great scale or fail epically. Knowing that a partner supports everything we do is key for all of the above: Respect, Healthy Disagreement, and Connection.

When you commit to a partnership, you commit to support. No matter the cause.

5. The Three F?s.?

FEED him. FUCK him. Make him FEEL like a man.?

I?ve taken a lot of shit for this one belief more than any other over the years. Despite dissenter?s arguments (always women) I firmly believe that in the confines of the relationship:?A?man is the man and the woman is the woman.?

This has nothing to do with income or status. ?Don?t tell me this is the 21st century and my thinking is old school and puts women?s lib back 100 years.

This has everything to do with EVOLUTION. Men need to be taken care of, have their sexual needs met, and know they are in charge of their domain.

Try to manipulate this by emasculating?your man, withholding sex, or always being in control and eventually your man will turn from you, in one way or another. ?Emotionally or physically you will lose him, many times to someone who will provide exactly what you would not.

?

Whether you are in a relationship currently or in pursuit of one, reminding yourself of the 5 elements above on a regular basis will ensure that your partnerships remain healthy and strong forever. ?Despite the escalating divorce rate and fear of commitment, everyone walking this earth would be completely satisfied with one?forever if done properly.

Do you have the commitment it takes to honor FOREVER??

Israelis expected to return Netanyahu to office

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israelis voted Tuesday in an election likely to keep hard-line Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the helm of government for a third term despite a turbulent record: no peace process with Palestinians, growing diplomatic isolation and signs of economic trouble ahead.

The balloting capped a lackluster three-month campaign that was expected to leave Netanyahu at the helm of a coalition dominated by hard-liners opposed to concessions that could bring Palestinians back to the negotiating table.

The outcome, if opinion polls are accurate, was expected to put Israel on the path to continued deadlock in peace efforts with the Palestinians and further run-ins with the international community, including its key ally, the United States.

Voters appeared to be overlooking Netanyahu's record over the past four years, and the conflict with the Palestinians, long the defining issue in Israeli politics, was largely absent from the campaign. That reflected the widespread Israeli belief that a peace deal is impossible and the dovish opposition's failure to unite behind a viable alternative candidate.

Netanyahu is widely seen, even by some opponents, as the man best suited to lead the country at a turbulent time. He has maintained a lead with a message that the country needs a tough-minded and experienced leader to face down dangers including the Iranian nuclear program, potentially loose chemical weapons in Syria and the rise of fundamentalist Islam in Egypt and other Arab countries amid the Arab Spring.

The results were not assured. Election officials reported relatively high turnout compared to previous years, boosted by sunny, spring-like weather. A heavy turnout could favor Netanyahu's opponents, whose voters tend to have a lower participation rate than the highly motivated hard-liners. In addition, opinion polls have often been inaccurate in the past.

Netanyahu, 63, was smiling when he arrived early at a heavily secured polling station in Jerusalem with his wife, Sara, and two sons, both first-time voters. After voting, the prime minister told reporters that a flood of ballots for his list "is good for Israel."

Many opponents have largely yielded the security issue to Netanyahu and instead campaigned on economic issues, such as the country's high cost of living and its much-maligned custom of giving generous handouts and draft exemptions to the ultra-Orthodox Jewish minority. While Israel's economy has remained on solid footing, Netanyahu's government has run up a huge deficit that could result in steep budget cuts in the coming months.

Only one major contender, former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, has campaigned on a platform centered on the need to restart peace talks and reach a deal with the Palestinians. Her new Movement party was expected to emerge as a midsize faction.

Livni implored voters to think about the "big decisions" at hand. "The vote I have cast includes the hopes of all the people who don't want four more years of Netanyahu and this government, for everyone who is worried about justice and Israel's isolation," she said

In the weeks running up to Tuesday's vote, opinion polls have universally forecast Netanyahu's Likud-Yisrael Beitenu emerging as the largest single bloc, controlling roughly one-quarter of parliament's 120 seats and in a strong position to form a new majority coalition. Along with other nationalist and religious parties that traditionally support him, Netanyahu is expected to be able to easily secure a majority of more than 61 seats.

Should the right wing and religious parties somehow fail to muster a majority, there will be a mad scramble on the center-left to try to form a coalition on their own.

Under such a shocking result, the prime minister could end up being Labor Party leader Shelly Yachimovich, a former radio journalist who once backed Israel's Communist party. Yachimovich, campaigning on a promise to narrow the gap between rich and poor, has already said she will not sit in a Netanyahu government. But such an outcome appeared unlikely.

In all, 32 parties were running for representation in parliament. Israel has historically had multiparty governments because no party has ever won an outright majority in the country's 64-year history. Polls close at 10 p.m. local time (3 p.m. EST, 2000 GMT), with exit poll results available immediately and official results trickling in throughout the night.

In a modern-day twist, many Israelis advertised their voting choice by photographing their completed ballot and uploading it to Facebook.

If victorious, Netanyahu is expected to explore reaching across the aisle to bring in at least one of the more centrist parties opposing him, both to reduce his reliance on the hard-liners and to present a more palatable face to the outside world.

But it remains unclear whether he would be able to do so, since it would require concessions on key issues, either economically or diplomatically, that would alienate his core supporters.

One potential centrist partner would be political newcomer Yair Lapid, a former TV talk show host, who has gained popularity by taking aim at the preferential treatment given to the ultra-Orthodox. Lapid has said, however, he will not be a "fig leaf" for an extremist government.

In any case, a shift by Netanyahu away from his tough line toward the Palestinians appears unlikely. Netanyahu himself has only grudgingly voiced conditional support for a Palestinian state, and his own party is now dominated by hard-liners who oppose even this.

A likely coalition partner, Naftali Bennett of the surging Jewish Home Party, has even called for annexing large parts of the West Bank, the core of any future Palestinian state. Bennett's party has siphoned off many Netanyahu supporters who believe the prime minister has grown soft.

Motti Saban, a 25-year-old student in Jerusalem, said he would vote for Jewish Home.

"We are right-wing and we want to see a parliament that is more right wing than now," Saban said. "Social issues affect us all, but I won't give up Jerusalem, that's more important," Saban said.

Up to one-sixth of the incoming legislature is expected to be settlers who advocate holding on to captured land the Palestinians want for a future state.

Netanyahu has won praise at home for drawing the world's attention to Iran's suspect nuclear program and for keeping the economy on solid ground at a time of global turmoil. Tehran denies it is seeking to develop atomic weapons as alleged by Israel, the U.S. and allies.

But internationally, he has repeatedly clashed with his allies over his handling of the peace process. Peace talks with the Palestinians have remained deadlocked throughout his term, in large part because of his continued construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

The Palestinians claim both areas, captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war, as part of their future state and refuse to negotiate while settlement construction takes place.

Netanyahu has said talks should resume without preconditions. The continued construction, along with Netanyahu's insistence that Israel retain all of east Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank, has led the Palestinians to conclude it is futile to even negotiate.

The international community has shown increasing impatience with Netanyahu. In November, the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of establishing a Palestinian state in all of the territories captured by Israel in 1967 ? the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.

The newly re-elected President Barack Obama has had a rocky relationship with Netanyahu and the two men could find themselves on a collision course in their new terms.

In London Tuesday, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Obama must now make the Middle East peace process his top priority, warning "we are approaching the last chance to bring about such a solution."

Critics warn that Israelis are ignoring the issue at their peril. First, signs are growing that the current lull in violence may be temporary ? both because the Palestinian street is getting frustrated and because Mahmoud Abbas' Palestinian Authority may cease the security cooperation that even Israeli officials have credited with the halt in fighting.

Beyond that, a persistent chorus warns that the status quo is ultimately self-defeating for Israel because the default outcome is a single entity in the Holy Land ? comprising Israel and all the areas it seized in the 1967 war. Based on current birthrates, most experts believe that Arabs would soon be the majority.

Palestinian officials say that Abbas has repeatedly warned Israeli visitors in recent months that Israel could end up like an "apartheid-style" state with a Jewish minority ruling over a disenfranchised Arab majority. At that point, the Arabs would turn their struggle away from independence and instead seek equality in a single state.

The rival Hamas government in Gaza condemned Netanyahu.

"It's clear that the election trends are moving from an extremist government toward more extreme government, which requires us as Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims to draw a strategy to confront the Zionist rising extremism," Hamas' prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh said.

Allergan aims to widen migraine treatment with MAP Pharma buy

(Reuters) - U.S. specialty drugmaker Allergan Inc said late on Tuesday that it would buy MAP Pharmaceuticals Inc for about $958 million in cash, an acquisition intended to widen its presence in the treatment of adult migraines.

MAP Pharmaceuticals is developing Levadex, an orally inhaled drug for the acute treatment of migraines in adults. Levadex is currently under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is set to make a decision about the drug around April 15.

Under the deal, Allergan will acquire 100 percent of the shares of MAP Pharmaceuticals at $25 per share, a 60 percent premium over MAP's closing stock price on the Nasdaq of $15.58 on Tuesday.

"We plan to capitalize on depth of expertise in neurology as we continue the global development of Levadex as a potential acute treatment for migraine," Allergen Chief Executive David Pyott said in a statement.

In the last few years, Allergan has received regulatory approvals in 56 countries for its drug Botox for use in the treatment of chronic migraine. Allergen now aims to position Levadex as a potential treatment for migraine that is complementary to Botox.

Botox, a popular wrinkle treatment, had also previously been approved for other non-cosmetic uses such severe underarm sweating and loss of bladder control due to nerve damage.

Allergan expects the MAP deal to dilute 2013 earnings by about 7 cents a share and add to its earnings by the second half of 2014.

The company expects to fund the deal with a combination of cash on hand, cash equivalents and short-term borrowings under its commercial paper program. The transaction is not subject to any financing contingency.
