Urine the Money

121129_glennbeck_obamapeepee

Glenn Beck preparing his masterpiece

Still from theblaze.com.

Glenn Beck offered to sell a likeness of President Obama submerged in a mason jar full of yellow liquid for $25,000 on Tuesday. The work, which Beck calls ?Obama in Pee Pee,? is an homage to Andres Serrano?s controversial 1989 photograph ?Piss Christ.? EBay canceled the auction because the company prohibits the sale of bodily fluids, but Beck later revealed the urine was fake and continued to take bids via email. Is it legal to sell your urine?

It depends on the reason and the location. Selling urine as part of a work of art appears to be legal. There is no federal law banning the practice. The National Organ Transplant Act prohibits a donor from receiving ?valuable consideration? for a kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, bone marrow, cornea, eye, bone, or skin, but the statute doesn?t mention urine. Several states have their own laws regarding the sale of human tissue and products, but most exempt tissue or fluids that are easily removed and renewable. Illinois, for example, excludes ?blood, plasma, blood products or derivatives, other body fluids, [and] human hair? from its organ-trafficking law. California?s ban applies only to ?nonrenewable or nonregenerative tissue.? (The statute lists blood plasma and sperm as nonrenewable products, raising questions about California legislators? knowledge of human physiology.)

Sale of urine is, however, illegal in certain states under specific circumstances. In the late 1990s, a South Carolina man named Kenneth Curtis launched a lucrative business selling his urine to people who worried that they might fail a company drug screen. He produced 50 urine samples a day by drinking large amounts of tea, coffee, and fruit juice. A laboratory analysis confirmed the samples were clean, and buyers paid $69 for each 5.5-ounce pouch of urine. Curtis claimed to sell more than 15,000 samples annually. South Carolina outlawed his business model in 1999, and other states have passed similar bans. These prohibitions, however, would not apply to Beck?s auction?even if it did involve real urine?because it is not intended to fool a drug test. (Curtis, incidentally, continued to sell his urine despite the ban, and other entrepreneurs have entered the field as well, helping workers to conceal drug use, pregnancy, or health conditions from employers.)

There?s very little debate over the sale of urine. The scholarly literature contains more arguments over the propriety of selling organs, blood, or breast milk. Advocates argue that an open market on body fluids and tissue would improve supply, while opponents say it would commodify the human body and encourage sellers to lie about their health status to make the sale. Since so few people want to buy urine, and it is never infused into a recipient, these arguments don?t seem to apply.

Some reports suggest that the yellow liquid in which Beck has submerged the Obama likeness is actually beer, which raises more legal issues than urine. Beck?s headquarters are in Texas, where you must obtain a permit to sell beverages containing greater than 1.5 percent alcohol by volume. There is no exception for sales of small volumes or for the purpose of political satire. Violators face fines and up to one year in county jail.

Brain Scans Show Differences in Adults With Autism - Health News ...

Brain 06 Brain Scans Show Differences in Adults With Autism
By Maureen Salamon
HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Nov. 29 (HealthDay News) ? Brain scans done on groups of men with autism show distinct differences in both the volume of specific regions and the activity of cells that signal a possible immune response, two new studies suggest.

Scientists in England and Japan used MRI and PET (positron emission tomography) scans to examine brain-based anatomical and cellular variations in those with autism. But the disparities ? while offering a deeper glimpse into the little-understood developmental disorder ? raised more questions about its cause and treatment that only further research can answer.

?There?s really strong evidence now that the immune system appears to be playing a role in autism, but we just don?t know what that role is,? said Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer of Autism Speaks, who was not involved in either study. ?There is such an urgent need for more research to understand the causes and more effective treatment for autism. Autism has really become a public health crisis, and we need to respond to this by greatly increasing the amount of research conducted so we can help families find answers.?

The studies were published online in this week?s issue of the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.

Affecting one in 88 children in the United States, autism is characterized by pervasive problems in social interaction and communication, as well as repetitive and restricted behavioral patterns and interests.

The Japanese study examined the brains of 20 men with autism using PET scans to focus on so-called microglia. These are cells that perform immune functions when the brain is exposed to ?insults? such as trauma, infection or clots. The PET images indicated excessive activation of microglia in multiple brain regions among those with autism when compared to a group of people without the disorder.

?This really raised the question about what the role is of these abnormalities,? said Dawson, who also is a professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill. ?Is this something that could help us explain the causes of autism? Is it a reaction to autism, or the brain?s response to developing in an unusual way??

?We don?t have the answers to these questions, but now they?re showing up in multiple studies so it does suggest that understanding the role of the immune system in autism may be an avenue to understanding its treatment,? she added.

The British study used MRI on 84 men with autism and a matched set of healthy participants. It suggested that those with autism have marked differences in cortical volume. These differences may be linked to its two components ? cortical thickness and surface area. Overall, participants with autism had greater cortical thickness within the frontal lobe regions of the brain and reduced surface area in other regions of the brain.

Study author Christine Ecker, a lecturer in neuroimaging at King?s College London, discussed such brain differences.

?We also know that about 50 percent of individuals with autism have an abnormally enlarged brain, particularly during early childhood, which suggests that those with autism have an atypical developmental trajectory of brain growth,? Ecker said. ?[Anatomical brain differences in these areas] are highly correlated with the severity of autistic symptoms, but we still need to establish how specific differences in surface area and cortical thickness affect wider autistic symptoms and traits.?

Dawson, who wrote an editorial accompanying the studies, noted that the last decade has brought an explosion of new research into autism, although she still feels funding for this work is lacking from federal agencies.

?It?s been amazing to see not only the number of new scientists that are beginning to devote their careers to autism research, but also the quality of scientists,? Dawson said. ?But despite the fact that we?re excited and encouraged by the numbers of publications increasing, we still feel the progress is far too slow.?

Roller coaster ruins won't stay as 'tourist attraction'

Mario Tama / Getty Images

Waves are seen on Nov. 16 breaking around a roller coaster destroyed during Superstorm Sandy in Seaside Heights, N.J.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

A crumpled roller coaster partially submerged in the Atlantic Ocean off of New Jersey's boardwalk won't stay there as a "tourist attraction," despite the town's mayor advocating for that a week ago.

The iconic Star Jet roller coaster in Seaside Heights was destroyed when Sandy crashed ashore Oct. 29, wrecking parts of Casino Pier and tearing the coaster from the boardwalk.

On Monday, Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers said that borough officials and Casino Pier owners have been in talks to remove the coaster from the ocean, where it has sat since the storm, reported The Asbury Park Press.

Akers got criticized when he told NBC New York last week that he was working with the Coast Guard to see if the ride was stable enough to just leave as-is.?

If it was, he said, it would make "a great tourist attraction."

Mario Tama / Getty Images

The destroyed roller coaster is seen in Seaside Heights, N.J., on Oct. 31.

His comments came after demolition crews finished removing the rest of the damage in the area in preparation for businesses to rebuild on the boardwalk, the town's financial and communal beating heart.

?Everyone all over on Facebook was commenting on it and took a shot at me,?? Akers said, according to The Asbury Park Press.?

On Monday, Akers tried to clarify his "tourist attraction" remark.

"I told them [NBC New York], that I did not have an issue with it [staying], it?s not my decision since its private property,?? Akers said to The Asbury Park Press. ?That was the extent of my comment, and then all of this firestorm. It was not the brightest comment.??

He added, ?If it was going to stay, there are issues...??Does it have to be anchored down properly? And the Coast Guard would need to approve it. The whole situation is unfortunate.??

According to Akers, tourism makes up 75 percent of Seaside Heights' budget, with the remaining 25 percent coming from property owners.?

?Our biggest concern is returning the boardwalk to where it was before the storm,?? he told The Asbury Park Press.??Tourism is the lifeblood of this town."

Construction of a new boardwalk is scheduled to begin in January and be ready by Memorial Day, according to NBC New York. Casino Pier officials are still assessing the cost of the damage.

An archival image of the Star Jet is seen at the Casino Pier, N.J., in 2007.

The now-defunct Star Jet roller coaster was built in 2002?by Portland, Ore.-based E&F Miler Industries. It replaced a decades-old roller coaster that had been in its spot and was demolished to make room for the new steel one, Fred Miler, principal of E&F Miler, told NBC News on Tuesday.

The ride had a maximum height of 52 feet, according to coastergallery.com.

Its name, Miler said, has caused some confusion.

"It's called the Star Jet," he said. "There was another coaster there that it replaced -- it was called the Jet Star. Sometimes they still use that name."

Roasted Carrot Onion Soup with Dukkah Spice | Food Loves Writing

I don?t know about you guys, but, for me, the days that follow Thanksgiving are, no contest, the least inspired days, cooking-wise, all year long. It?s not that there?s a lack of food?my parents? fridge is no doubt still full, today on Tuesday, with bowls and bowls of leftovers from Thursday?s spread, and that meal was just one of the many we took part in all weekend. It?s not that there?s a lack of ideas?I checked into my Google Reader sometime Sunday and tucked away recipes for pumpkin risotto and oaty shortbread and red lentils and spinach in masala sauce.

It?s just that, listen, we are full.

carrots | foodloveswriting.com

Maybe you feel the same way? Between my parents? place and Tim?s relatives? house and a favorite restaurant and a new favorite snack (full or not, I?ll take an entire case of those, thankyouverymuch), we ate our weight in holiday meals, and by Sunday night, when we returned to our kitchen, where the refrigerator was the polar opposite of where we?d been, the bearer of a paltry bag of carrots, eggs, butter and one-and-a-half kombuchas from last week, it was all we could do to drink a glass of water and go to sleep.

Coming home from a long weekend like this last one means many things?exhaustion, unpacking, laundry and looming work?but also, the minute we pulled up to our driveway, it means mail. After our few days away, the mailbox we share with neighbors was, of course, stuffed, holding junkmail, our Christmas cards (hooray! and, by the way, if you haven?t ordered yours yet, my friend Sarah?s doing a $75 Minted giveaway!) and, best of all, this month?s issue of Bon Appetit.

So yesterday morning, amidst cleaning and ebay-selling and conference-calling and work, I flipped through the magazine in case, by some miracle, a lunch could be made with what we had on hand. Enter this roasted carrot onion soup with dukkah spice.

roasted carrot & onion soup | foodloveswriting.com

I ended up replacing a pound of the carrots with onion, the fennel seeds with anise and the pistachios with hazelnuts (there was exactly 1/2 cup of hazelnuts in the pantry! would you believe it!) to make it work, but, all in all, this beautiful and spice-filled soup is a perfect testament to making do with what one has?and, made of the ever-affordable carrots and onions, topped with a unique spiced mixture unlike anything I?ve ever tried, combined with the container of vegetable broth I?ve been freezing since my last Tamar-Adler-vegetable-scraps-boiling a few weeks back, this recipe is also a testament to the fact that while some of the best meals we enjoy are the Thanksgiving feasts?others are the simplest, just a bowl of soup and a spoon.

Roasted Carrot Onion Soup with Dukkah Spice
Services four to six

I?ve made carrot soup before, right after my mom bought me my first Le Creuset, but this version, topped with a nutty spice blend, is an entirely different taste experience. When you stir the finely chopped hazelnuts and spices through each bowl, the entire recipe takes on new life.

Note, also, that the original recipe also suggested adding a dollop of yogurt to each bowl (but, as you can imagine, that wasn?t something we had on hand yesterday).

Ingredients:
1/2 cup hazelnuts
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon anise seeds
1/4 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
1 teaspoon kosher salt (plus more, to taste)
1 pound carrots, peeled and cut into one-inch pieces
1 pound onions, peeled and cut into one-inch pieces
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 quart of vegetable broth

Directions:
1. MAKE DUKKAH SPICE BLEND.
In a large skillet over medium-low heat, toast hazelnuts until fragrant, around five minutes. Let them cool and rub handfuls between your palms, letting the skins fall to the skillet. Separate the toasted, mostly skinned nuts to a plate and set aside. Dump out the skins in the trash and fill the skillet with the sesame seeds, coriander, cumin, anise seeds and black peppercorns. Toast for about one or two minutes, stirring often, until very fragrant. Set aside onto same plate with nuts. Let cool. Transfer mixture to food processor, adding one teaspoon salt. Coarsely grind. (Note: this spice mixture may be made up to a week ahead of time and kept, airtight, at room temperature.)

2. ROAST VEGETABLES.
Preheat oven to 375F. Place carrots and onions on rimmed baking sheet, and toss with melted butter, adding a little salt (and pepper, if desired) all over. Roast until vegetables are tender and just beginning to turn golden, about 45 minutes. Let them cool.

3. PUR?E VEGETABLES.
Transfer carrots and onions to a blender, and add the quart of broth. (Don?t use a food processor here. Use a blender or a Vitamix. If you do use a food processor, the broth will spill out through the middle and out onto the counter and the floor and all over your hands, just trust me.) Blend until very smooth, about two or three minutes.

4. ASSEMBLE SOUP.
Pour the mixture into a stockpot over medium heat, stirring occasionally. You may add water to reach the consistency you like. Season to taste with salt and pepper, but keep in mind the dukkah spice mixture has salt in it, as well.

Divide soup among bowls and top with dukkah spices to taste.

Eight-year term sought for California campaign treasurer fraud

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors are seeking an eight-year prison sentence for a Democratic campaign treasurer accused of draining up to $20 million from the war chests of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and other politicians, court documents showed on Monday.

Kinde Durkee, who controlled the funds of some 400 political candidates and groups, should spend 97 months in federal custody and pay an as-yet undetermined amount of restitution, a sentencing memo by prosecutors said.

Durkee was arrested in September 2011 and charged with criminal mail fraud. She pleaded guilty in March as part of a deal with prosecutors and is expected to be sentenced on Wednesday.

"Over the course of approximately 12 years, the defendant misappropriated millions of dollars from clients, used the money for her personal and business expenses, and prepared false campaign disclosure reports to hide the theft," the memo said.

The arrest of the longtime treasurer for Democratic politicians left the campaigns of a number of elected officials in disarray.

Prosecutors have said in court documents that Durkee used money siphoned from her clients to pay expenses such as the mortgage on her condominium, visits to Disneyland, charges on her credit cards, medical bills and her own firm's business costs.

Feinstein, a Democratic senator from California, has said in documents filed with the Federal Election Commission that she lost at least $4.5 million to Durkee.

Under the terms of her plea agreement, to help make restitution to her former clients, Durkee must sell a property in Burbank, California, that had housed the offices of her now-defunct business, Durkee & Associates.

Prosecutors said they expect to have a final restitution amount by Wednesday's sentencing hearing.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

Many people make use of social media each day. They will use their accounts to share information with all their family and friends. Due to this, information can be spread quickly throughout the Internet, as information is exchanged from one friend to another. This is good news for businesses; if you advertise properly, your business marketing materials will quickly reach all of your potential customers. The article below contains tips to help you navigate the world of social media marketing with ease.

Look for opportunities to combine print ads with social media. You can do things like include your different profile addresses or post some of your poster as well as flyers in one of your photo albums. Generate more interest from your customers by giving them a preview of your campaign online, or by having a photo contest related to your posters.

Retweet updates from other influential Twitter users which you believe your followers would benefit from reading. These people will receive a notification when you make such mentions, which means they may retweet your content or respond to what you?ve said.

People like having the option to comment on your blog. This is crucial, especially if you prefer to keep your more direct contact information private, including your email address. Monitor your posts closely, but do allow them! Delete any nonconstructive negative comments, spam, or other offensive commentary.

When posting videos to YouTube make sure there is a link to click on that takes the viewer to your site. Set the link up where it describes your video, and also have a Twitter and Facebook button near your videos on your channel. When you have YouTube users following you on Twitter or Facebook, they will probably share your videos with all their friends.

Use giveaways to get more followers. To entice them to enter the contest, get them to sign up on your Facebook page or become a Twitter follower as an added incentive. Give out a prize, no matter how small, to whoever gets the most people to subscribe to you and that will drive people to you.

Limit the amount of posting you do on behalf of your company at Facebook and other social media sites. Three posts in a day is plenty. Posting too many times in a day can leave your customers feeling overwhelmed and make it more likely that they will stop following you. Post the three items or issues you want to apprise your customers of for the day, then wait until tomorrow to post anything else.

If you have a social media presence, always respond to people when they ask a question or post a comment. Look for comments every time you log on.

Keep in mind the techniques that worked for you and your colleagues previously. Knowing what has worked and what hasn?t will allow you to embrace strategies that work and avoid those that don?t. By doing that, you can keep in mind what will and won?t work when you try again.

Hold an online contest for a free product or service, and broadcast it through all of your social media channels. People love getting things that are free, and they will gladly fill out any forms or follow your business on any social media site if they could possibly win. Don?t forget to publicize who won the contest, as some people don?t believe that these contests are real. It is also, of course, another opportunity to advertise.

As has been said, millions of people subscribe to social media. Content is being both created and shared at a rapid pace. Companies can use this to their advantage by spreading info about things they offer. Using the tips from this article, you can use social media marketing to get the word out about your company.

Why You Should Test And Track Your Internet Marketing Campaign

Want to know the fastest way to analyze your internet business and determine whether or not you can be successful with it? If so, then you?ve made a wise decision. The bottom line is that if you want to make alot of sales online, you will have to track and test your results. Every new campaign or marketing piece that you develop needs to be tested for effectiveness. You will want to do this to roll with the winners, and leave the losing marketing pieces behind.

And it doesn?t matter is you?re making $10 a month or even $10,000 a month. You still need to be testing and tracking your results. This is something that is universal, despite your income. In fact, all of the internet marketing pros will tell you that if you don?t want to lose money on your campaign, you will want to always test and track everything that you do.

I?m a big fan of this idea. You can?t expect to proceed into profitability if you?re not producing the sales and results that you can only get with analyzing your campaigns. So this is something that you will absolutely need to be doing if you want to see your online business take off.

One of the first things that you will want to test and track is your sales letter. If you?re leading people directly to your sales letter and you?re not getting alot of sales, then you will want to take a thorough look at why your campaigns aren?t producing for you in the way that you want it to.

The first thing I would look at is the headline. This is the first thing that people will see when they arrive at your website. Your headline can literally make or break your success. The best way to analyze a good headline is with the ?so what? test. Ask yourself? after reading your headline, ask yourself this question:

?So what??

If you can come up with a good answer to this question, you know you have an effective headline. Some times a sub-headline underneath your main headline can help to answer this question. No matter how you reach the answer, make sure you have a good answer to the ?so what? test.

The next thing I would analyze is the traffic that I?m receiving. I would look at traffic sources and then analyze where they are coming from. If I?m implementing alot of marketing strategies, I would test each and every one of them out, to find marketing strategies that aren?t producing for me. After you find the ones that aren?t producing for you, stop doing them and replace them with strategies that are effective.

This will allow you to have more free time in your business, or to replace these strategies with strategies that are more effective. It all depends on your goals and what you hope to receive out of marketing your online business.

These ideas for testing and tracking your results are things that you will want to start putting to use right away in your internet business. This is something that can be very helpful for the overall growth of your business.

And once you reach ultimate profitability, keep running your successful campaigns over and over again so that you can reach mega sales incredibly fast.

Good luck with testing and tracking your results in your internet business.

Black Friday sales slip as shoppers opt for Thursday ?doorbusters?

Security guards break up a fight between shoppers outside a Bowling Green, Ky., Target, Nov. 22, 2012. (AP)

Black Friday, the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season, saw more foot traffic than ever before, according to estimates. But it appears so-called "doorbuster" deals offered the day before dinged sales.

According to ShopperTrak, which tracks retail foot traffic, there were more than 307 million store visits on Friday, up 3.5 percent. But Black Friday shoppers spent an estimated $11.2 billion, down 1.8 percent over 2011, when consumers spent $11.4 billion.

And for once, the sluggish economy is not to blame.

"It is all Black Thursday's fault," ZeroHedge.com said.

[Slideshow: Black Friday madness]

Shopping malls were "less hectic" on Black Friday this year, Bloomberg.com reported, as retailers "have turned Black Friday, once a one-day event after Thanksgiving, into a week's worth of deals and discounts."

And Thursday's deals "attracted some of the spending that's usually meant for Friday," ShopperTrak said.

Big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target were open on Thanksgiving night, drawing crowds that were--in some cases--rowdy. (Thankfully, it was nothing like the dystopian version of shopping hell recently envisioned by "Saturday Night Live.")

Another reason for the Black Friday dip: people skipped lines and shopped online. According to IBM Benchmark, online sales rose 17 percent on Thanksgiving and 21 percent on Black Friday.

Magnificently renovated Boston duplex is a top sale | Boston Homes ...

A magnificent Back Bay duplex that overlooks the Public Garden is among recent spectacular sales.
Tracy Campion of Campion and Company Real Estate was the listing and selling broker for the 2,614-square-foot home with two-plus bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths at 2 Arlington St. It was sold Oct. 18 for $2.45 million.
The garden- and first-floor condominium is located within a beautiful French Academic-style building, built in 1861.
The building was converted to five condominiums in 1979 and had been updated in 2008.
Last year, it was meticulously renovated, including building a new interior staircase, which created a nice flow.
A dining area with a 12-foot ceiling with a beautiful chandelier lies just inside the front door of this unit, and a wide archway to the left leads into the living room with two huge windows that give views of the Public Garden. In addition to the views, the carved Carrara marble mantelpiece is a striking feature of the room.

Toward the back of the residence is an updated, skylit kitchen with new cabinetry and high-end appliances and marble countertops.
The other room on this floor is a large family room with a fireplace with a marble mantelpiece. The windows draw in lots of natural light; they have a view of a delightful private brick courtyard.
On the garden level are two bedroom suites on either side of a transition room with a huge window that looks out to the garden. Close by is a laundry closet with a stacked washer and dryer.
The smaller bedroom features a new en suite bath tiled with brown marble and a glass-enclosed shower. The master bedroom suite boasts an en suite bath tiled with Crema Marfil marble. This spa-like bath has a deep soaking tub with jets and a glass-enclosed shower and separate closet for the toilet. A huge walk-in closet that has built-out shelves and hanging roods has an interior closet too.
Both bedrooms have access to the garden courtyard, which includes water and electric service. Accent lights set into the bricks and wall lamps allow for entertaining well into he evening. A gate in the courtyard leads to the rental parking spot behind the building.

Where to Eat (and Drink) - The Somerville Beat

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you?re recovering from your food hangover. After spending so much time in the kitchen this week, you?re probably ready to dine out this weekend. Here are some of my favorite restaurants in Somerville to try during the next few days and beyond ?

Breakfast

3 Little Figs: This cozy spot at 278 Highland Ave. serves delicious baked goods (many with seasonal flavors, though I?m partial to the avocado muffin and the banana muffin) as well as Greek-inspired dishes like the flakey, rich spinach pie. For breakfast, I love the housemade granola with locally made Greek yogurt and fruit. And don?t forget the coffee, which is brewed to perfection. (Note: The Figs aren?t open Friday, November 23, but will be serving up tasty goodies 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.)

Renee?s: This classic diner, located at 198 Holland St. in Teele Square, offers more than just the usual fare. From inspired omelettes and a plethora of eggs Benedict varieties to choose from to pancakes and waffles with seasonal flavors, there?s something to please everyone?s palate. The friendly staff refills your coffee often and lets you linger with the locals.

Lunch

Bloc 11: While this cafe at 11 Bow St. in Union Square does breakfast well, it does lunch even better. I usually rotate between the?Arrow sandwich (marinated tempeh, cheddar cheese, avocado, banana ring peppers and greens on rye) and the Union salad (greens, shredded beets, a hard-boiled egg, sliced almonds and cheese cubes with a choice of chicken salad, tuna salad, tofu salad or marinated tempeh). The soups are fresh-made and the perfect way to warm up on a chilly fall day. With a variety of options for meat-lovers and vegetarians alike, Bloc 11 is my go-to lunch spot in the ?Ville.

Sherman Cafe: Local food is all the rage these days, but few places do it better than Sherman Cafe (257 Washington St.) in Union Square. The funky eatery serves everything from hearty salads and sandwiches to cheese plates and soups showcasing regionally grown and produced food. Try the green hummus (your mouth will thank you) or if you?re looking for a light bite, get a snack of a local apple with Teddie Peanut Butter (made right down the road in Everett).

The Biscuit: Located near the Somerville/Cambridge line at 406 Washington St., the Biscuit is a terrific place to visit any time of the day?for breakfast, lunch or your afternoon pick-me-up. I?m partial to lunch at the cozy cafe, which offers vegetarian, vegan and carnivorous options like the?Helsinki sandwich (smoked salmon, cream cheese, pickled red onion and mesclun greens on potato dill bread) or a?hot vegan sandwich featuring lots of veggies and a tahini dressing. And don?t forget to pick up some of the Biscuit?s legendary baked goods for a treat later!

Dinner

Highland Kitchen: Hands-down my favorite restaurant in Somerville (and perhaps anywhere), Highland Kitchen (150 Highland Ave.) offers a fresh take on comfort food and creative cocktails with some of the best service I?ve ever experienced. Come early or try to score a coveted bar seat and put some of your favorite songs on the jukebox while you settle in at one of Somerville?s most fun restaurants.

True Bistro: Probably my other favorite restaurant in Somerville, True Bistro (1153 Broadway) in Teele Square is an upscale vegan eatery that satisfies both veggie and meat lovers. Innovative dishes, professional service and an intimate atmosphere make True Bistro the perfect place to take a date.

Drinks

Backbar: Maybe you?re still too stuffed from all that Thanksgiving food to even think about eating out yet. Even if that?s the case, I bet you have room for some of the best cocktails in the Boston area. You?ll find them tucked away in an alley in Union Square at Backbar (9 Sanborn Court). With a menu that changes all the time and some of the best bartenders anywhere, Backbar is a real hidden gem. And if you can fit a bit of room for food, try the spicy caramel corn, it?s divine!

The Independent: I often joke that the Independent is my kitchen away from home because it?s our neighborhood go-to spot when we want to get a tasty meal out without a lot of fuss. And while the food is delicious, the bar is truly outstanding. This time of year I?m partial to the hot-buttered cider, but you really can?t go wrong with any of the special cocktails or dozens of beers on tap.

P.S. This is just a sampling of the restaurants and bars I?ve reviewed in Somerville and the surrounding area. You can see the full list here. Happy eating!

Calif.-Vegas party train could hit tracks in 2013

This undated artistic rendering provided by Las Vegas Railway Express shows the interior of the X Train, a proposed luxury ?party train that would run from Fullerton, Calif., to downtown Las Vegas. For $99 each way, passengers would get food, drinks, access to two on-board "ultra lounges" and other amenities. The company signed an agreement last week with Union Pacific Railroad allowing them to use a set of tracks that leads to downtown Las Vegas but hasn't seen passenger traffic in 15 years. (AP Photo/Las Vegas Railway Express)

(AP) ? As if a weekend in Las Vegas isn't wild enough for Southern Californians, a Nevada entrepreneur is about to add five more hours of party to either end.

After striking an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad last week, the Las Vegas Railway Express is one step closer to bringing to life the X Train, a luxurious "party train" complete with big screen TVs, recliners and two ultra lounges.

"The whole idea is when you get on a train, you feel like you're in Las Vegas," said Michael Barron, president and CEO of the $100 million venture that hopes to launch its maiden voyage on New Year's Eve 2013. "It's essentially a nightclub on wheels."

Tourists can't get from Southern California to Las Vegas by rail alone, and Barron's company isn't the first to try and fix that. The much-talked-about XpressWest project proposes a high-speed train connecting Sin City to the region from which it draws 25 percent of its tourists.

But it's a multi-billion-dollar proposal that would require setting new tracks, and it's often panned as a "train to nowhere" because the first phase would start in relatively obscure Victorville, about 100 miles outside of Los Angeles.

The X Train proposal calls for an Amtrak crew aboard a 576-passenger train that runs at standard speeds on traditional tracks.

It would start in Fullerton, Calif. ? already home to an Amtrak station and part of Southern California's Metrolink commuter train network ? and end in downtown Las Vegas.

A conditional agreement with Union Pacific, approved Nov. 16, will allow the company to use a rail line that's currently limited to freight trains and hasn't served passengers since Amtrak discontinued its Desert Wind service in 1997 due to low ridership.

Tickets for the adults-only train would cost $99 each way and include a meal and beverage, with plenty more alcohol available for purchase. To keep ticket prices low, the company would try to make money booking Las Vegas hotels and entertainment for passengers.

With initial plans for one trip a day on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday, Barron believes he can attract tourists weary of the weekend traffic gridlock and perhaps hung over from their weekend revelry.

"Sunday is horrific," Barron said of the Interstate 15 corridor that links Las Vegas and its neighbor. "So now you've been up for 40 hours gambling and you have to drive for seven hours ? that's just horrible. But people do it in spite of that!"

John Lawson, who was in Las Vegas from Orange County for a few days over Thanksgiving, said he'd like the option of hopping on a train rather than braving bumper-to-bumper traffic on the way back.

"If you party really hard, it sucks driving back," said Lawson, 28.

Vegas visitor Christina Bojorquez, 25, said she'd have to weigh the cost of the train ride against other cheap options, including discounted flights and sharing the expense of driving to Vegas.

"For special occasions it would be good, but not all the time," she said.

Tom Skancke, a transportation consultant for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, pointed to the proposed trains and other alternatives to personal cars as options that could entice a new generation of tourists. A new Greyhound Express nonstop bus route between L.A. and Las Vegas launched earlier this month.

"These modes of transportation do appeal to a younger, more eco-friendly traveler," Skancke said. "This generation is more interested in passenger rail, transit and high-speed rail than previous generations."

There's still work to be done on the X Train to get it running by late 2013. The sixteen cars the company has purchased need to be renovated, and a station needs to be completed in downtown Vegas.

"We're four years and $12 million into it. It's a lot of infrastructure building," Barron said. "This is a simple concept in discussion, but it's complicated to do."
